God damnit this game. You know i already have massive expectation. Unrealistic even. The game just delivers.

The setting is god damn brilliant. The writing is definitely THE best in videogame i have read so far. The absolute best. When it is being cheeky, and trying to be funny, i laughed, when detective work is involved, it doesm make me think, when feels hit, it hits like 125 mm artillery shell right in the groin.

Woah I didn't hear about this game until today (nearly made a topic about it before I searched). I might have seen the name but I don't think it ever occurred to me that it's a story based RPG.

It sounds incredible! I have so many games to play and a baby coming in a month but I'm still tempted because of that God damn GOG deal.

It does have a disco ball with flashing light in the end of chapter 1.

Also one of the most depressing dialogue i have read in videogames.

So it's the kind of game you want to play again with different stats (average, and then different ones at the minimum or maxed out) to see the different branches?

finished it in 30 hours. there are some flaws in the end, but really amazing game. it is not perfect (should be perfect with some tweaking, but i guess it's too late now)

but still amazing game. the best writing in games, great world, atmosphere, characters, nuances, fun and thrilling.

there are 2 things that i honestly didn't like, but aside from that, the game is superb.

the characters especially, are 95% memorable, well written, sympathetic or well developed. the quest and how they relate to the characters are supremely done. kim kitsuragi your partner is probably one of my favorite party member ever. he's not just your foil as drunk, broken cop. he is nuanced, a good cop, have past, hobbies, secretly mischievous, but all around will have your back 100% if you made him trust you.

one example of the brilliant side quest story is

you keep annoying this lady if her husband is missing. if you bug her enough, she finally confessed, still reluctantly that her husband hasn't come home since yesterday. so she asked you to look for him, probably getting drunk with his friends. when a new area open, you found a corpse, wearing the jacket she described, got too drunk, fell and hit his head on a bench. you deduce this is her husband, and you report it to your precinct, and finally you have to visit her apartment and tell her the bad news. it's just so sad, and very real and handled superbly.

it really spoil the culprit so beware

the culprit itself are outside the casts that are shown in the game. so all the suspects the game gave you are dead ends. you still have to investigate properly or else you cannot pin the crime on the culprit (i have seen people said they got alot of thing wrong, and the whole police precinct think you are a drunk, crazy has been that randomly accuse people and basically get the bad ending because alot of the points in the investigations are missing)

the best thing you can do is guess that the culprit isn't one of these people. the character of the culprit itself is fine, his confrontation is amazing, well written and if you correctly collect evidences the puzzle fit perfectly.

i think my problem with it is violate the detective genre convention that the culprit must be established early in the story and a part of the cast, and that take a bit of fun in guessing yourself.

there is a but. if you really investigate properly, you will always come to the conclusion (not shown in game, but your own deduction) that it is impossible for any of the main cast and suspects be the culprit because the pieces don't fit. but yeah, the convention is more of a guideline, and the main villain is a great character if you compare to everyone else. their existences are also hinted everywhere in the game if you pay attention but you just don't physically meet them until the end

there is also one major confrontation in game

where certain people always die no matter what you do. you can affect the process and outcome, like how many died, and how bad the damage is, but the script always determine at the very least 3 people will die, whereas the rest of the game are very free investigating

imo these 2 moments made it a bit disappointing, but the game made up with all the other part being so great. even those 2 moments that i feel weaker compared to the rest of the game are still well written and presented very well.

i dunno if they can or ever tweak it, but i know a little tweak that would make it alot better. it is also probably artistic decision, but i dunno, you judge yourself.

there is also this troll item. basically the most expensive thing in the game. you have to almost take bribe, as corrupt as possible, and sell every items you found to get this money, basically leaving you with almost nothing. it's a literal street lamp, and this screenshot is the epitome of masterful trolling (not my pic)

I also really eig the soundtrack. It's sounds like the spinoff of british sea power's album from the sea to the land beyond. Melancholic, have this sense of longing to them.

I'm not *that* familiar with the detective genre but I've always thought of it in the way you described, with how I always thought of the culprit as an established character you're able to guess if you think about it well enough.

Can't say I'm against them going against the grain, though. I think. It still sounds like it's more than worth playing though, so whatever! :D

It was kinda disappointing, but worth playing still for that literature level writing.

There are two approaches to detectives. One you can guess the suspect because it focuses on the mystery, the other is to focus on the detective and investigation.
