I've got AMC A-List, so I've been going to the movies quite a bit this year.

So far I've seen:
Escape Room
Alita: Battle Angel
How To Train Your Dragon 3
Five Feet Apart
Us
Dumbo (2019)
Avengers: Endgame
Ma
Rocketman
The Dead Don't Die
Aladdin (2019)
Child's Play (2019)
Late Night
Toy Story 4
Midsommar
Spider-Man: Far From Home
Crawl
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Booksmart
The Art Of Self Defense
The Farewell
The Lion King (2019)
Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark
Ready Or Not
The Peanut Butter Falcon
Luce
It: Chapter 2
Don't Let Go
Hustlers
Ad Astra
Judy
Joker
Abominable
The Addams Family (2019)

I did also see The Matrix in theaters for its 20th Anniversary re-release, and I did see The Lego Movie: The Second Part that came out this year, but not in theaters, I watched it on HBO Go a couple days ago.

So far, my top 5 in no particular order this year would probably be:
Rocketman
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
The Art Of Self Defense
Joker
Hustlers

My least favorite movie this year so far is probably either Ma, Dumbo, or The Lion King. Got practically no enjoyment from any of those 3.

Overall I... liked? Midsommar but it definitely wasn't what I was expecting, and I honestly think Ari Aster should have gone even further with it; If you're gonna make a "horror" movie where the "horror" is derived from making the audience as uncomfortable as possible, than fucking go all out with that shit. Only the last 20 minutes or so really managed to get under my skin; the rest was a vain attempt at worldbuilding without actually telling us anything about the world, resulting in a lot of build-up but no true satisfaction. Yet, the cinematography and acting performances were phenomenal, so I have very mixed feelings about the film.

Toy Story 4 was the definition of mediocre.

Yeah, I wanna say it came out in March?

Missed it though, still haven't seen it. Honestly been a little burned out on the MCU the past couple years, but Endgame was too big a build up for me to miss.

Damn, I still really need to see Detective Pikachu, I got AMC A-List literally right after it was out of theaters. :(

And yeah, Lion King fucking sucked IMO.

The Art Of Self Defense took me off guard with jsut how much I loved it. It's probably one of the driest films I've ever seen, but it utilizes that tone so well and to such great effect. It's fucking wonderful.

Hustlers also took me by surprise how much I loved it. I thought it was gonna be like that Burlesque movie (I.E. bad), but it was actually very well directed, acted, and gave a surprising amount of sympathy to its lead characters considering what they were doing.

Both are wonderful films.

Literally only Midsommar.

I already had a really strong idea of what the plot was going to be like after seeing the trailer, but it turned out to be a lot eerier than I anticipated. I loved the screenplay and imagery here.

I haven't seen any in a cinema- I usually end up just buying them on iTunes at launch since that's my best chance of actually watching something new-ish.

Does it count if I dropped my wife off to watch the Lion King with her mothers group?

Damn, RIP.

If you have an AMC theater relatively close by you should absolutely look into getting AMC A-List. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made as a film lover tbh.

Considering it adds absolutely nothing new of value and you probably got as much out of it by driving away from the theater as you would have sitting down and watching it, I'll allow it.

How was Fighting With My Family? I remember the trailer looking fun but never got a chance to see it.

And I'm sure I'll end up seeing Zombieland 2 just because I loved the first one, but I'm honestly not very hype for it. The trailer looked very eh.

While I understand the sentiment there, there are some movies that you just don't get the same experience with watching on a 32 inch home tv as opposed to a giant theater screen.

Also sneak in snacks, it's not very hard tbh.

fighting my family was enjoyable. i liked it showed her past until that moment her time to shine happened. only saw it once. i know paige was the focus but the supporting cast really held up their roles enough for me to wishing they had more scenes.

i too aint too hyped for it mainly cause its been forever since the first movie tbh. i am watching it cause im interested how these zombies ended up after all these years. do they stay the same or go world war z? lol

Is there a particular reason cinemas make you nervous? THe crowds? Something else?

Regardless, that's fair. At the end of the day it ultimately doesn't really matter where you see a movie (except watching on a phone screen, fuck that), but there's still something special about watching a movie in theaters for me. There's definitely movies I've loved watching in theaters that if I had seen for the first time on a smaller screen I doubt I'd have liked nearly as much.
