The K-pop star Sulli has died aged 25.

Police told the BBC the singer's manager found her dead at her home near Seoul, South Korea.

They say they are investigating the cause of her death and are working on the assumption that she may have taken her own life.

The star, who had more than five million followers on Instagram, was a former member of the band F(x) until she left in 2015 to focus on her acting career.

I saw her live with F(x) a long time ago.

RIP. I didn't know much about her since I'm fairly new to kpop but I heard snippets about how she used to be heavily bullied. Looking around, I see a lot of people placing blame on SM (her company) for not properly taking care of her during her dire times.

Another Korean star lost due to lack of good mental health treatment...it's sad but unshocking at this point, which just makes it sadder.

School should teach you how to adult instead of how to solve for x.
I got no clue how to adult but I sure as hell can figure out what x is in 7x = 4 + 27 X 8.

Earlier this year there was some more awareness for it since Mina from Twice got performance anxiety

Places and groups will say "Oh this is important! We should do something about it!" and maybe implement something that has a shelf life of a few months. And then go back to the status quo.

Fucking Sewol sank and local school responses were to cancel all trips for the semester and added extra safety drills that no one took seriously. And then went right back to normal a year later.

This country is ridiculous on actually doing anything that can save lives.
Just like every other country I know....

It largely depends on your company imo. Like as mentioned, Mina from Twice had to sit out the rest of their world tour due to performance anxiety and mental health issues. She participated in their latest music video but other than that, JYP has let her rest and not participate in anything until she's ready. Hell, when people were starting rumors about her situation, JYP put out a statement that they'll pursue legal action against people spreading slander against her. JYP himself was an idol so he knows the rigors the industry can put idols through.

Because those two were negatively affected by Korean work culture, specficially their pop acts, and the disdain for mental health needs?

Korean work culture definitely have mental health problems specific to them but American mental healthcare is also horrific lets be honest.

Of course. I mention that in my first post. But it was a stupid comment that I was responding to.

Someone says that hate how Korea views mental health and that most likely contributed to a young girl's suicide. And another person says "Oh yeah but what about these two Americans!?"

It makes no sense. It's like when a school shooting happens and people bring up a stabbing spree in China to somehow.....argue the overall point.

True... And Taeyeon, not exactly the most well adjusted idol ever. :( I don't wanna lose Taeyeon.... well, don't wanna lose anyone of course, but yeah.

And now IU & Krystal (former band mate) is receiving hate for not grieving in public and didn't post anything on their social media accounts with regards to Sulli's passing. Turns out that both were attending Sulli's funeral in person and was by her side the whole time.

This is what I hate about this age. If you don't post shit on social media then it means you didn't do it. And from what I hear, knetizens are the worst about stuff like that and their idols in general

In a way. At least in regards to US celebrities, we've learned to accept them in all shapes and sizes. Knetz often bully idols by fat shaming them (even though they aren't anywhere near fat) or call them ugly. Got to the point where Chaeryong's (from girl group Itzy) mom had to tell people to stop bullying and calling her ugly.

It was nearly entirely from female online communities who make it their mission to mercilessly shit on any and all female celebrities, they largely dont even like kpop, the same type of communities who purposely mistranslated Sana's post about the new era in Japan and spread it around to get people to hate her for being "anti-Korea". Sulli just happened to be an easy target. Male dominant and mixed online communities were never overly negative about her

US twitter is just as bad as any knet communities about s***ting on fat/ugly celebrities, its just that there are also communities that will vocally defend them

Exactly. Don't assume that sites like Allkpop and Netizenbuzz are accurate reflections of what Korean netizens are. There's plenty of positive and supportive Korean netizen fans, but the western media is pretty much gonna ignore that because it doesn't generate clicks.
