Most people don't go to college to learn. They go because it's expected of them and promised to be "the best years of their lives".

Two problems with people in college: they go because they feel they should as said in post 2 and they also have no fucking idea how to behave as adults because secondary education is trash

Most people dont go to learn. They go to party or because its expected of them because throughout high school, its drilled into your head to go to college. There are so many people who dont belong in college. When I tutored, it was baffling how many students couldnt even do basic algebra. I had a student who couldnt even do 6 + 6 without a calculator.

People dont do the coursework because theyve never done so. High school is basically how to cheat.

Most students write powerpoints down verbatim because no one taught them what note taking actually means.

Most students dont care about the material theyre forced to spend money on, because you obviously need to take chemistry as a psychology major for some reason. So no shit people are less inclined to do work.

During this stage, people have jobs and other obligations. Coursework that honestly isnt that vital is the least of peoples worries.

Unless youre talking grad school.

Please do not speak for every high school experience. Several of my teachers drilled vital note taking and other college skills into our heads before we graduated. Cheating and plagiarism were taken incredibly seriously in many of my AP classes. Besides, it doesnt take much to figure out how to take notes. Its not hard. In an age where many professors upload the slides or let you record lectures, you dont even need to take notes for some classes.

It doesnt matter if you dont care for the material. I dont care for a lot of things but that doesnt mean I wont give it my all for a good grade. If you lack the attention span for one or two hour classes, college isnt for you. I couldnt give a shit about a computer programming class I took but it was for an internship so you better believe I cared enough.

Having a job and other obligations is no excuse unless youre supporting a family or barely making ends meet or another extreme scenario. People tend to have loads of free time in undergrad because its usually not that difficult depending upon your major. I worked 30+ hours per week at a shitty retail job and still met the expectations of my coursework with damn maximum number of credit hours. Even took on a second job later on. I knew a guy who had a wife and three small children yet he still worked a demanding job on top of keeping up his grades in extremely difficult classes. People just lack work ethic these days.

Once again, if you go to college to goof off and not take it seriously, then its not for you. I personally know way too many people who have said theyre only there for the college experience. If youre paying all this money, then at least try or give a damn.

I disagree. Careers are gated by degrees. Job opportunity is gated by degrees.

What used to just be a leg up is now a requirement.

But instead of allowing students to take classes they actually want to take, undergrad is full of filler bullshit.

One should take human nature into account. Teens and young adults who have been told how things must be done for 12 years are going to get burnt out. There are high schools that dont know how to facilitate learning. They grade notes and annotations so that a student feels inclined to only do it for the grade. Who reads when theres sites like sparknotes?

Why take college seriously when its an inflated obstacle to what people actually want to do?

I get people do fulltime work and full time school while having a family and shit. Good for them.

But dont act like college is some optional thing that people can choose to do or not. School is not like the workforce. So just because people arent motivated to do school doesnt mean they shouldnt.

College is optional. Its not the only path a person has to take in life. However, the youth of today dont know that. Nobody teaches them that there are other opportunities in life. Senior year of high school, its all college college college college from every adult.

Degress dont mean as much anymore compared to who you know and having good networking. There are people who told me that they would have their friends or family members put in a good word for me if I ever decided to work at the same hospital years later down the line. Most of my professors always said its about knowing the right people instead of just having degrees and thats absolutely correct. Lot of people Ive worked with in retail got their degrees but couldnt get a job even over a decade after graduating.

Yes, undergrad is full of bullshit and yes most high schools tend to be useless when it comes to teaching students how to prepare for college. However, it does fall upon the student to take matters into their own hands. People shouldnt be babied after a certain age. It sucks but you do what you have to do. Plenty of websites can help you prep for college these days.

If you don't have a degree, then you basically can't get a job. That's just how it is now. And you don't need to do the reading in order to pass. College professors hand out A's and B's like candy. Just pass the tests and you'll be fine. School is a complete joke

Depends on college and/or state rules. In Oklahoma, Calculus wasn't a general education requirement course, in Texas, up through Pre-Calculus was gen-ed, and Calc 1 is almost as prevalent.

I blame industry mostly for taking advantage. Raise the bar because they can, not because it's necessary. I would guess the majority of jobs that on paper require a degree absolutely should not.

That doesn't stop me from complaining about the modern cesspool that is undergrads, though.

I think a lot of it has to do with our cultural attitude right now: people fight the idea of having to do something they don't particularly want to, even if it's part of the course or program they signed up for. Yes it sucks, and undergrads are a bad holdover concept from a time where we weren't told to have our career path planed from pre-junior high school, but do you think your job will never ask you to get out of your comfort zone and still give your best at it? Because it doesn't stop at school. I all but have to wrestle people at work, even ones in upper management, to do tasks they're responsible for, but put off, or even will pay thousands of dollars for software to avoid having to do themselves.

I disagree with the notion of it being "right now." College as a safe maturation space has been a thing for at least 70 years.

I think it depends on the country and/or university.

I studied for my bachelor in a no-name private university and some of the students are so goddamn lazy. One guy did next to nothing for a few semesters and then just dropped out entirely. When it comes to these no-name universities, some students treat it as a glorified holiday, using the student visa to stay for a long time.

My master's degree is in a much better university and I can't remember knowing anyone that's lazy. Some may screw around during lectures and may not show up entirely, but rarely do I see people not submitting assignments.

Gtfo out with this, theres plenty of jobs out there for you to be making a s*** ton of money without any sorta degree. Electricians, warehouse worker, plumbers, trucking, welding, construction or etc. Also these.

Depends what field you're majoring in as well. There wasn't a whole lot of slackers going for the engineering degrees at the school I went to, although there was a few. Even the few who were slackers and stuck out like a sore thumb had like 2.5 GPAs.

Eh, whether or not their performance in course work is actually all that important probably depends on their industry. Maybe their grades aren't so hot, but if they're building a network and showing through extracurriculars that they are competent and work well on project and with people, they may getting exactly what they need out of college.

So I wouldn't just look at the course work. I would look holistically at their body of activity in college. It's most important that they are taking advantage of the unique opportunities to explore and ultimately lay the foundation to achieve their future goals. It is the people who neglect this, that are sort of on "auto pilot" until they delayed adolescence ends that are in trouble.

When I was last in college, there were a ton of maladjusted people who were trying to figure life out. A not insignificant number of people seemed ill-prepared for even a watered down college-level education. I first went to college over a decade ago now, and I don't recall it being nearly this bad. I think degrees have increased in importance and a ton more people are being funneled into college than are ready for it.

I don't look down on people who don't attend classes. I just hope they figure things out and are able to move forward with their lives at some point.
