In Three Houses' case, basically the same way Persona manages it, in the sense that you're given downtime between battles to socialize with your party members.

In between battles you have conversations with your units and activity points you can spend on raising their morale (used to help improve their skills) and improving their relationships with both you and each other.

In some of the earlier games, there was a support system where you could build supports between pairs of characters by having them fight together, which would grant them stat boosts and unlock support conversations. However, in those earlier games, very few of these supports actually led to romantic pairings or paired endings, and they were mostly side stories to learn more about those characters. It wasn't until Awakening when they expanded the support system, gave the player an avatar character and allowed the option to marry a recruitable character, then both Fates and Three Houses would follow suit. These three are the only ones that could be called "dating sims" in the Fire Emblem franchise.

Kagadiditfirst, kind of. Genealogy was basically a eugenics simulator before the 3DS games made that popular.

True, I forgot about that one.

But Genealogy still lacks the player avatar aspect, so it's just a "matchmaking sim" rather than a "dating sim" like Awakening, Fates, and Three Houses were. Plus it actually tied into the story of that game with the second half of the game focusing on the second generation of characters. Awakening also had a good reason for its second generation characters to be in the story, but they were clearly shoehorned into Fates for no good reason other than to pander and sell the games to the waifu fanbase that Awakening had brought in.

This is why Kagaalsodiditbest. If a game's gonna include gen 2 units, don't make most of them completely optional. Playing Awakening for the first time and I'm basically just sticking with my already good gen 1 units because I can't be bothered to grind the gen 2 units.
