Nope.

Several of us have been saying for some years now that China is a threat that we need to take seriously. We've mentioned their increased militarization before, especially with those fortified islands, and that Taiwan will eventually be a problem that has to be resolved. Some people did pay attention to the trade dispute, but you still have a lot complaining about the resulting difficulties. Ultimately, it seems that most people focused on Russia instead because of Trump. Now, here we are with Hong Kong and it doesn't look good for the protesters. But it's not like no one was noticing these issues.

The way I feel is I wish China would just wise up and realize that Hong Kong was doing fine without having to have their arm twisted by the mainland.

As I see it China is capitalizing on Hong Kong's strong global economic placement as a white-collar megalopolis and they don't have any comprehension that their way of doing things is incompatible with that culture and way of life. If they just left well-enough alone without trying to impose their own misguided ideals I think the relationship would have been mutually beneficial. Instead China is driving a wedge and doesn't seem to care what harm comes of it on both sides, which is unfortunate.

Actually if you watch the 70th anniversary parade that they had on the beginning on this month you'll be very damn surprised at how far they have advanced militarily. Also in recent news there were a lot of talks about China's new programs to design stealth fighter jets that can contest ours as well as their very first aircraft carrier.
