- No alts, no rallying, no begging for something to get more votes, etc., etc., you know the drill.
- If you change your mind and would like to swap your vote, you may do so. As soon as it is 24 hours since the match topic was started, you may not change your vote and new votes will not be counted.

I'm da winnera!

VVVVVV - Piercing the Sky - worldenddominator #1?! It is my least favorite of the setlist.
beatmania IIDX 24 SINOBUZ - DORNWALD ~Der Junge im Kfig~- huh, I didn't know about this "extended" version of Junge. Junge's one of my all-time favorites, so it makes me happy to find out about this.

every umineko song that was popular on "old board 8" makes me nostalgic for 2009 or whenever. this is the one umineko track that was popular then that's stuck with me the most though. Just can't beat this polymetric edm for me (unless you have other tracks from the same game that are even more polymeter-centric than this and still have cool sounds I like (hello psy-chorus and rhythm-changer)). 3:23 bringing back that polymeter layer but putting it in a more hopeful context and on sounds I love...way too good. Emotion contrast there is ridiculous powerful and it's such a perfect way to end it before it loops. a bunch of the tracks from this have that 7/8 polymeter layer as a recurring theme, but I think this is the one I'd say focuses the most on it by far, and it does a great job at doing THINGS with it. The whole thing as a whole is nice and dark, intense, full of cool sounds, just so many things I look for in a track. Definitely one of my favorite umineko tracks, my favorite non-xaki one and my favorite zts one (so 3rd favorite overall after psy-chorus/rhythm-changer (excluding chiru stuff))

VVVVVV music is so good at being addictive melodically, and comes with this nice full sound even if the timbres its using are all beeps. This is a pretty good example of what I like about vVVvVv and was......my favorite VVVVVV song at one point...that point is right now. This is my favorite VVVVVV song RIGHT NOW. though I'd probably say my favorite is Predestined Fate or something else on other days

I like the type of song Lake of Tears is, love jazzy/souly/funky music with this kind of modern cleany-produced flair, but it definitely doesn't stand out to me within that category at all. I guess similar to the blue reflection track from yesterday, too emotionally neutral for me in how it comes across to me. Still think it's nice. Vibraphone is my favorite non-synth instrument so thrilled to see it represented here~!

I usually prefer long versions but I think the short version puts this in a compact form where it makes me focus on the parts I like more. Still tons of superelectronic and superprog moments going on here that I adore. Most of what I like here most is coming from either the piano or the strings.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni - worldenddominator
beatmania IIDX 24 SINOBUZ - DORNWALD ~Der Junge im Kfig~

MATCH 1

To me, worldenddominator's honestly the most quintessential song in Umineko's soundtrack. I feel like if you were to ask fans of this game what the most popular, defining, or well-liked songs in the game are, you'd get a lot of people giving this song as an answer for all 3 of those questions. That's pretty much why I felt that this song had to be in the #1 slot. As for the song itself, I love all the emotions it packs into this from dark and tense to calm, somber even. Definitely a shining example of zts at his best. Though, I think this is actually a close second for favorite zts Umineko song. I feel like I enjoy lastendconductor just a little bit more.

Piercing the Sky is also a very good representative from VVVVVV's soundtrack, but there's no way I vote against worldenddominator here. I'll show you this golden dream!!

Very strong match.

MATCH 2

Lake of Tears feels very tropical. Like this kind of composition just makes me feel like I'm at a beach resort or something. Really relaxing song that I like a lot!

I feel like I like this long version slightly less, but the main highlights of the song, the vocals and the piano harmonizing, are fortunately still very prominent, so my score for this wouldn't be lowered by that much. Pretty close match, but I'm feeling Dornwald more right now.

worldenddominator > Piercing the Sky > DORNWALD ~Der Junge im Kfig~ > Lake of Tears

Good songs today!

CHANGE my vote to worldenddominator. though it is still my least favorite Umineko rep... granted, all the reps I score between 7.5 and 8.5, so it's not like I don't like it overall! I love the 7/4 on top of 4/4 late in the loop, as well as some of the cool voice leading after that. I would have given this an 8.5 or even a 9 if wasn't for the obnoxiously loud beat....

VVVVVV - Piercing the Sky
Murasaki Tsurugi - Lake of Tears

Holy wow, tough day and there's a lot to digest. Let's start from the top.

Piercing the Sky is kind of perfect. And I don't mean that it's perfect like "best VGM song ever" or whatever. I mean that it accomplishes everything it sets out to do, and no part that you could add or subtract would reasonably improve it. I feel this way about most of VVVVVV, but Piercing is really the -one- where all the elements come together and take you off on this soaring, evocative adventure with dramatic highs and lows. It wants you to dance, to move, but it also wants you to reflect. To push past the limits of what you're capable of, or what you think you're capable of, and pierce the fucking sky.
I love this song, dude.

"VVVVVV vs. Umineko is the most obviously B8 final possible, and it's surprising it took 5 contests for us to reach this point"
~FL81

I haven't been around here long enough to really understand the weight of this, but even without a first-hand account I can tell that Umineko music is held up as a sort of gold standard. It's the bar, and very, very few things are going to be able to best it. That all out and said, I don't get it. I've listened through worldenddominator something like four times in a row today, each time more critically; poring over details I may not have noticed before. And I still feel so empty.

Maybe I just needed to be there, you know? A couple years give or take of a song like this growing on you to the point of being a fond memory. But for now, it has precious little to offer me. Even the bits that I did like (the harpsichord solo and glitchy distortions in the back half) couldn't make much of a difference since the whole is so bland and played-out. Maybe I'll feel differently with time.

Moving on, Murasaki's been tearing up the snubs bracket, eh? And we might not be done just yet, because damn if Lake of Tears doesn't have the right moves. In some places, it reminds me of another game in the bracket: Ripple Dot Zero. Swap FM for contemporary synth production and it might make a lesser Part Two track for a Crater Lake-type area. Also wanted to note that the sweep pads, heavily associated with hard EDM of the day, are put to great use during lulls just before the repeating chorus. On the whole, it's a shiny little funk/jazz fusion arrangement that's just sticky enough to keep you coming on back for play after play.

DORNWALD made some admirable headway in the last VGMC, and it's not difficult to see why. Track's got a lot of B8 appeal for sure, and the great moments are like stupid great. But the parts alone don't make a whole and, while I can't remember if this was the version used in VGMC or not, I definitely enjoy the in-game cut more since it's got just the right amount of all the good stuff. Stings to vote against this today, but I consistently and confidently prefer Lake of Tears that bit more.

I mean, I'd not have expected you in particular to ever find interest in it given how much you're kinda hard to warm up to any remotely modern sounding edm stuff. and there's definitely people who were always vocally meh on or even actively against umineko

It's not an "it grows on you, you'd like it if you were there" thing i don't think really, it's just a thing that's in the category of NOT your particular taste and that's all there is to it. It fits mine but it definitely doesn't have to do with me being around then...I'm just a lot more fond of stuff in this direction (ie modern-ish edm, which you're very frequently averse to) than you are and that's all i think, probably one of the more major differences between my taste and yours despite how similar they often are in other ways

Oh hm, I don't want to clutter the thread in progress but that does cast a more reasonable light on things. Though in this case I'm not sure if it's specifically the EDM side of wed that I reacted to.

Piercing the Sky is actually the vvvvvv song I really like but Umineko still better.

Also for the record I think exposure through board 8 might give sort of a distorted view of the Umineko soundtrack? I feel like what board 8 mostly talks about are the zts songs, which I do like a lot, but also they only comprise like 5% of an OST that is very diverse in terms of the styles of music it has on it. That variety is actually a much bigger factor in why I praise the Umineko OST than just really liking dreamenddischarger or worldenddominator whatever. I'm not sure if you'd like the other stuff more or not, but there's definitely a lot more types of songs than just this edm stuff.

Lake of Tears

in a weird way I kind of want whichever winner song that loses here to also lose in the losers bracket just because it would feel like a shame to have the last song that goes into it just make a U-Turn mockery of the entire extra system we've done. Which is also somewhat odd for me to think about because I would think it's cool if VVVVVVV won and I'm not even voting for it here so maybe I need to rethink priorities anyway also the picture of the dude for the vvvvvv song bugs me more than it should but that doesn't affect my vote
