Can't speak/read Chinese so I can't vouch for its veracity but this seems interesting: https://twitter.com/SGBluebell/status/1182817588147052544

I've been helping a lot of chinese people make their business emails seem more natural to native english speakers and everything he's saying is 100% on point.

This post is particularly potent.

I think mc is missing the fact that this post IS written in english. It's not, like, a sloppy translation where the grammar is incorrect; the person who wrote this is what I would describe as fluent in english. But they are not native in english, and there are certain choices of phrasing that make that clear to me, things that are "technically correct" but are not the way I would write something. The biggest 'smoking gun' for me is this paragraph:

"But playing fair also includes appropriate pre-and post-match conduct, especially when a player accepts recognition for winning in a broadcast. When we think about the suspension, six months for blitzchung is more appropriate, after which time he can compete in the Hearthstone pro circuit again if he so chooses. There is a consequence for taking the conversation away from the purpose of the event and disrupting or derailing the broadcast."

Nothing in this paragraph is incorrect so to speak, but there are two things that stand out to me here.

1) "When we think about the suspension..." It's really difficult for me to pinpoint the exact reason why this phrasing is odd, but it is, and I just know it when I see it. If I were writing a formal statement like this, I would probably start this sentence as something like, "after further consideration..." Starting this out as "when we think" clearly comes across to me as someone who learned a slightly odd way of saying things. Something about the tense is just wrong here.

2) "There is a consequence..." No, there are consequences. Again, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly why this is wrong, but the phrasing here clearly would be "there are consequences." It would not occur to me to say "there is a consequence." It might slip out in casual conversation as a result of me conjuring up words in a slightly disjointed order, but it wouldn't occur in writing.

I'm not an expert on this sort of thing, but I have seen a lot of words before, and I've seen enough words written or spoken by people of other linguistic backgrounds to know it when I see it. This isn't a knock on people who only know english as a second language, since the subtleties here are so precise that I can't even describe WHY they are the way they are, but it just... is.

I don't even know what I should take away from any of this I just think it's neat

Yeah this sentence alone has so many poorly chosen words, an english speaker can clearly detect the sinister undertones of the sentence and would word it to be more corporate-diplomatic. It would probably read something more like "Ultimately, there was still a rule broken, and to keep the focus on the gameplay and event, we still believe this to be a reasonable course of action"

damn blizzard should hire me to proof read their chinese directed corporate speak. MC can you give blizzard my number

Yeah, that's the thing. People have brushed this off as "oh, it's just corporate speak," but no it's not, again I wouldn't describe myself as an expert but I've seen enough corporate speak in my life and this ain't it.

Nah, it actually is a pretty smart business decision. Americans are moral cowards, and because we (mostly) have capitalism, purchase decisions are (mostly) decentralized. There is no single authority who can just say "Welp, Blizzard products are now banned" here, like there is in China.

And China has proven they totally will do that. They don't fuck around with this stuff. They are quite serious about what they will and won't tolerate, while we mostly just bitch a lot but then continue to buy products and support companies who 100% oppose our core values.

What the? Why are there semicolons instead of commas after Think Globally, Lead Responsibly? Like...I can see why if someone had this in a word processor, the word processor might put a red underline and tell you to add a semicolon. "Think Globally" is technically a complete sentence. But in this context it's an object, enumerating core values.

For a list preceded by a colon, if one or more of those items has a comma, most style guides will recommend the use of semicolons in order to make things clear.

The weirdest thing about this for me is that I don't really mind this being a compromise between western and Chinese interests, though the punishment's still kinda harsh. Just, you know, don't lie to me and tell me it wasn't.

Capitalism led to fascism in the 1940s, and it's doing it again now. Let's not blame an economic system for uniquely evil men wanting to amass unfettered power, and co-opting their government to so do.

social media is leading to fascism, but thats mostly because our new capitalistic system revolves a LOT on who is getting the most retweets, followers, likes, etc.

Anytime a major new event that changes the day to day human experience, major conflicts occur. Social media is setting the stage for something bad, and its getting worse and worse every year.

Fascism is always the end goal of a government. The point is how much power the individual has to resist moving towards that.

Communist sympathizers can't imagine that their dear overlords would ever turn evil, while in the same breath dismissing all existing and past examples of that exact thing by saying that all government systems can lead to fascism. As if it's not a problem just because it's not a unique problem.

The natural end result of that super dismissive attitude is, of course, massacre/police/famine/etc apologism. Hopefully you don't end up there.

it's still on my mind, but I will admit that I'm not a good representation of the average person. I was actually surprised at how much the community reactions on the first few days were similar to my own. now, the talk I see on those same communities has gone more toward what I would have expected from other people.

people are just going to be the way that people are. it's hard to get a lot of them to care about something for longer than a short while. though I will say this still feels a bit bigger than just the random outrage of the day. the only thing we can do is wait to see blizzard's next quarterly report. that will tell us how many people chose to boycott over this and actually stayed away from blizzard long enough for it to matter.

maybe I'll be disappointed when I see the report but it's kinda pointless to act disappointed in the movement already before we've seen ANY substantial data to suggest one way or the other.

just because people aren't talking about it 24/7 doesn't mean they aren't thinking about it. and there's going to be people who just put blizzard out of their mind entirely, like, totally given up on blizzard, which is also a good thing. that also contributes to the boycott even if they aren't constantly posting about it on board 8 or reddit.

I'm just being a pessimist

I think it's hard to get people focused on an issue when it's so far away and with no end in sight and with news cycles it's easy for companies to just stay quiet and let the focus shift to something else. China let the 2014 Umbrella Movement die out after the students grew tired and eventually gave up so I'm expecting more of the same here

the people of Hong Kong will keep fighting but for how long?
