With a bunch of stuff set to private, it might make them think youre hiding something.

lolwut? Stop.

Or it might look like you dont have a life of friends because of the lack of pictures because people think they can use social media to fully understand a person.

What?

Only in that it saves them the effort of googling for themselves. In terms of the final result (that is, them seeing what's on the profile), they're identical.

No, it's far more than that. If you give somebody something, it's because you expect them to look at it. If you expect somebody to look at something, you should have enough common sense to clean up whatever might be considered objectionable. If somebody either lacks that common sense or has an exceedingly different standard, an employer very rightfully might not want them working for the company. And a LOT of employers will make their decisions based on that. In this particular case, they used a photo as an example of what they don't like to see.

If she learned from this instead of kvetched about it, she might have been better off next time. Most people never get much in the way of insights why a company actually rejected them.

This response does nothing to refute my assertion that this is not the sort of conduct that will negatively impact employers. The whole point of this discussion is that their aversion to such conduct is stupid and an overreaching invasion of employees'/applicants' personal lives, not to try and suggest that the company didn't do what they very obviously did.

Again, she's going for a job that likely includes social media work. Her decision-making regarding social is ABSOLUTELY relevant to the job.

If rewording the question will help you understand it better, sure (though we should perhaps stick with "unprofessional," since "questionable" is substantially more vague and not relevant to the matter at hand here). Do you plan on answering it, now that you understand it?

How can I reword it so you finally understand why that swimsuit is questionable, though? If she chose to post photos of herself on a nude beach, would you even find *that* unacceptable? Do you have a bar at all?

Yeah. Happens all the time. People might suspect youre hiding something we things are set to private. Or are you too old to understand that? It happens quite often...

What?

It was pretty easy to understand. They may think youre boring. Wouldnt be too far of a stretch for that company, tbh...

With somebody you're *dating*, maybe. An employer is going to understand that not all photos are work-appropriate. Everybody else understands that some photos are going to be private.

Companies aren't going to track how many photos you have a large group of friends in and there are plenty of work-appropriate photos you can take with friends. And a company that does social media work is less interested in your real-world friends than it is your digital ones.

They might understand. I would also think they would understand that people wear bathing suits in a pool and wouldnt be a big deal. But apparently not. They could think someone setting up a private account means they have something to hide...

If you are going for a social media position, and your account looks like a social media desert due to all your photos being private, theres probably a good chance you wont get hired. As for you other photos, the problem is knowing what is and isnt work appropriate. As you can see, many dont think the photo she had was inappropriate. Some do. How do we know something else benign wont also be deemed inappropriate? The answer is, we dont. They can make any photo seem like its worse than it is. Maybe they say she drinks too much because she had a picture of her on a cruise ship with an alcoholic drink. Maybe she parties too much because she has lots of photos out with her friends. Anything can seem bad if you put whatever narrative you want on it...

...you don't need to set a private account, you just need to set some photos to private. And that's hardly a run-of-the-mill bathing suit.

If all of your photos are of you drinking, snapping lewd selfies in risque outfits, etc, you need to re-examine your life. However, even from the selection you see there, CLEARLY she has normal photos which depict her with friends. It's not the all-or-nothing situation you pretend it to be.

That's clearly not benign. Showing copious underboob is broadly frowned upon.

...which is why you don't show photos of yourself intoxicated. Pro-tip: You also shouldn't publicly display photos of simulated sex acts, photos where you're using drugs, photos of you committing a crime, etc, if you're planning on showing your profile to an employer.

Yeah. But it's also not the worst thing out there. And it still covered her up. The problem is knowing what to cover up...

I never said it was all or nothing, nor pretended it to be. The problem is what kind of story they add to the picture. Like maybe they say she parties to much... Or maybe they'll say her dress is too short.

Sure. In a professional setting. Don't go to work like that. In a picture while in the pool should be fine. Even if it's your boss. They are all adults. And it still didn't show anything that needed to be covered up.

Who said she was intoxicated. Having one drink doesn't mean anything. Even having the drink doesn't mean anything. Maybe she wanted a picture with it because it looked cool. But they can add any story they want to it. It could be a virgin drink for someone who doesn't drink alcohol. And like I said, you still don't know what they will find acceptable or not. You list normal things like sec and drugs. But standing in a pool is neither. And her picture wasn't bad. And in the end, it doesn't matter what the picture shows if they look at it the wrong way.
