do you people really think I answered the question like that? I was giving an example of a human conversation which is expected from a functional adult.

i have very strong educational and experience credentials, but yeah I still gave a normal human response even though I'm low key antisocial myself lol

What...I'm just giving helpful interview tips. That question doesnt mean "tell me about your hobbies". You have a limited time in interviews, never pass up the chance to illustrate how you are a good fit for the job. Being an avid movie watcher ain't it unless you're working in hollywood

Thats a lazy question from an interviewer., if an interview starts like that reconsider if you want to work there.

It could be to build rapport/put the candidate at ease... as it's one of those questions where there is no right/wrong answer (although there are right/wrong ways to answer a question in general/present oneself in an interview).

And if you're talking large fortune 500s/big 4/etc... I can guarantee there's a whole science and checklist of things which the interviewer has been trained to look for and consider in every question. Even being in the interview, we already get given the psychometric results/personality assessment as well as your SHL testing results.

I'd disagree. A nervous wreck in an interview is not someone I'd aspire to hire.

even for technical interviews, behavioral aspects play a huge factor. who cares if you can solve 5 lc hards in 1 hour if you're such an asshole no one would be able to work with you for 5 minutes? or if you're so antisocial it takes 5 pms, 2 managers, and a director to get you to update the team?

Being nervous in an interview doesnt mean they are not suitable for the job. Its natural to be nervous in an interview. Any good employer will see past the nerves.

That's a completely valid stance but it's not one that employers share. Despite you being selected for an interview, the interview is still what they consider the "first impression"

Thats true, but nerves arent nescessarily negative except for certain situations. id say if its for an acting roles or if the nerves are interview-crippling then yeah its bad. But if someone just sounds a bit nervous in their voice, fidgets a little bit etc its fine.

Very little and you're on top of your shit, you can get away with it. But if theres a candidate 10% less qualified but absolutely stone cold confident, he will definitely leave the better impression

At least for our company, one of the things we try to do is put the candidate at ease with the opening and help remove the nerves, but if they still can't get over it, then this will be an issue. We aren't an acting role or whatever, but like most organisations, we're client/customer facing - and being nervous/unable to articulate your position doesn't inspire confidence in whatever services we deliver.

Anyway it's unlikely that we'll convince you otherwise but I'd caution anyone else reading this thread (not that it'll last long on CE) to be mindful of the importance of perception and first impressions even if the role may not appear to explicitly require someone to be "confident".

That doesnt make them good interview questions. Might as well tell your interviewer that your greatest weakness is Kryponite.

I like the "what are your hobbies" question. My go to is cooking (it really is a hobby of mine) and it tends to get a laugh and break the ice a little, I think.

I just don't think that's a good interview question. I feel like it's an indirect way of asking about family life as a lot of people would answer about how they spend time with their kids, etc.

Or simple to ensure you are not one dimensional.

Passion drives people. And for client or customer facing roles it can help you build rapport if you have something non work to talk about.

I'm just explaining the objective reason for why these questions became popular. The question and their answers sub communicate a lot about the candidate. Just because you cant see that doesnt make it any less true

Im just trying to explain to you why popular doesnt equate to good. Just because you cant see that doesnt make it less true, either.

Please explain to me why it is a bad question and how you answer it and I'll illustrate to you what that sub communicates and how to improve your answer
