To me it depends on the case. Let's say it promotes violence against a group of people like "kill all _______". I'd say yes. But I think people who make ignorant comments can be educated. I've met people who used to be homophobic and changed. Also when I see people doing that I am concerned about collateral damage(if that ignorant has kids, their dads/moms losing their jobs may prevent them from getting fed)

This is an argument against people getting fired, not specifically one about people making dumb comments online.

My stance is don't say it at all online if you don't want repercussions. They should think about the possibility of getting fired and if they're fired for saying something stupid online then they should blame themselves not anyone else.

Do you share your concern about "collateral damage" for people fired over any other reason? I think you should, of course.

I don't see why people feel the need to go on a crusade against people for their own personal beliefs. Before you would just say "You're an ignorant prick, don't talk to me" or you'd try to educate them. Maybe after enough negative social interactions they decide to change their ways.. or they don't. Whatever, you don't have to associate with them.

This way of thinking seems pretty in line with the American prison system, tbh. Not geared toward education or rehabilitation at all, just ruining their life indefinitely and making them as miserable as possible. "They broke the law so fuck 'em, let 'em rot in there for life or kill 'em."

We need a database of ignorant/racist/bigoted/fascist people who get outed. They should never be allowed to find work and thus fund their hate again. We live in a world where PoC and LGBTQIA+ folk have to fear for their lives every time they step outside. They shouldn't have to wonder if that creepy dude stocking shelves in Walmart has a "different opinion" about their human rights.

Early on, like mid 90's, I was taught "If you wouldn't stand on a desk and say it to a roomful of people, don't say it online" Sound advice that a lot of people never learned. Seems like the logic now is to say "it's just a joke", which doesn't fool anybody with a modicum of intelligence.

I'm all for rehabilitation, but I question the feasibility. Bigoted ignorance is strong, and tends to go hand in hand with a blanket distrust of authority, if internet racists are anything to go by.

So why put up with em at all, when you could just not? Unlike the prison system, it's not expensive and not producing even worse criminals. It's just preventing people from having to deal with a racist, and having the brand or company associated with racism online.

I don't know. On one hand I think cancel culture is bullshit, on the other I think people who are dumb enough to post this shit under their real name and real picture probably deserve it.

Like, there's shitposting and just trying to get a reaction out of someone. But when you start putting it under your real name? There might be some truth to the shit you're talking. Does that mean your whole life should be destroyed? Probably not, but it's still pretty fucking stupid so I can't feel too sorry for these people.

That's taking it too far, which is weird cause I remember your username being more connected to conservative viewpoints. Maybe this is meant to be parody?

Either way, I'm all for good societal standards being a force on company policy.

I will never understand why people make racist or ignorant comments under their real full name, or a username that can be easily traced back to their real name. I will say though that you can't always exactly tell if a person's views have improved over the years.

Companies should 100% have the right to fire somebody over distasteful/hateful comments. Im iffy on public doxxing tho, so I'd rather the jobs find out not through the "witch hunt" but rather private messages.

Fuck that "we need to educate them!", education is free on the internet and some have gone too far down the rabbit hole to convert on the spot

I mean I am not talking about extreme cases like if someone joined a white suppremacist gang or something.

But I have seen a girl I know contact a company because someone used "gay" as an insult jokingly to one of his friend. The worst part is that she is guilty of doing so herself which make her very hypocritical.
