He only has three "bad" books after the accident, Lisey's Story, Cell, and Sleeping Beauties. Before the accident, he has Firestarter, Gerald's Game, Dolores Claiborne, Rose Madder, Tommyknockers, and The Dark Half.

I'm counting Dreamcatcher as part of the accident since it was basically his recovery.

I think that has more to do with his cocaine habit than the accident.

And I didn't read the post fully. Dolores Claiborne and Gerald's Game are great. Rose Madder is more weird as fuck than bad. I'll give you Tommyknockers and the Dark Half tho.

Except he wrote both fantastic and terrible stuff pre and post sobriety. That may have altered the content, but it didn't make him a better or worse writer.

For a good deal of time I brought up his addictions and memory loss during the 80s any time he was mentioned or I saw someone reading him. Kind of cringey in retrospect.

For one, that was about Cujo not Tommyknockers. For two, that doesn't say anything about the quality, Cujo was great.

My bad, it was Cujo.

But let me get some support for my theory by directly quoting Stephen King:
Did the quality of your writing start to go down?
Yeah, it did. I mean, The Tommyknockers is an awful book. That was the last one I wrote before I cleaned up my act. And Ive thought about it a lot lately and said to myself, Theres really a good book in here, underneath all the sort of spurious energy that cocaine provides, and I ought to go back. The book is about 700 pages long, and Im thinking, Theres probably a good 350-page novel in there.

But again, I can't really place that on drugs like he does, because he had that issue before, and after too. There's definitely a good book in The Tommyknockers, imo it doesn't even need to be cut down. I remember feeling like Tommyknockers would be far better if it was longer.

Cell comes immediately to mind. Very similar issues - interesting take on an old premise that starts out extremely strong and falls apart hard after the first act. Insomnia and Sleeping Beauties both had interesting ideas but couldn't hold it together, and I never really liked Desperation or Regulators as much as I felt I should.

Under The Dome is fantastic. Definitely King's worst ending, but that doesn't change that the actual journey of the story is amazing.

HATED Gerald's Game. Didn't like any of the characters and didn't feel like any of the gore in it was earned.

I really enjoyed The Dark Half. Alexis Machine was a good character. I actually read Tommyknockers again not long ago, its not a bad book at all imo. I like Gard and how he was such a drunken badass. I also enjoyed Rose Madder a lot.

One the other hand, i also reread the Shining recently and it wasnt nearly as good as I remembered. Still a classic but it scared me some the first time I read it years ago.

It is one of my favorite King books. I also really liked The Eyes of the Dragon. I agree the Dark Tower series gets kinda ridiculous by Song of Susannah. Its been so long since I read it, but I remember struggling to finish Wolves of the Calla. Wizard and Glass was great though.

Okay fine.

Running Man, however, was a mediocre story, but just the right kind of awful as a movie.
