Hello everyone, and welcome to the long-in-progress bracket contest version of tazzy's Top 100 Video Game Characters project. During the course of said project, someone pointed out that exactly 128 characters reached the tiebreaker voting phase or better, and I decided to run with that observation in the logical and obvious way.

Without further ado, here is the resulting bracket:

https://challonge.com/B8VGC

It is officially open for predictions as of right now, which is why I opted to host it on Challonge over Bracketmaker, which requires those who wish to submit predictions to register accounts first. Predictions will be open for roughly 3 days, until the outset of the first four matches at 3:30 PM PDT on Thursday, September 19. From there, this contest will have four matches per day through the end of the second round, two per day in the third round, and one per day from the fourth round through its conclusion.

In order to ensure that each set of matches starts at about the same time, as well as for a backup for my planned vacation sometime next month, I will be cohosting this contest with kind volunteer @MZero11. Along the lines of maintaining scheduling consistency, we will be running tiebreakers on a 1-day offset from the end of the original tied match whenever possible.

Well, that's all I have to say here. I'm looking forward to a fun contest for everyone who participates!

Indeed. I labeled all the participants exactly as they were during the course of tazzy's project, but in retrospect, that's perhaps a bit unclear in this case, so it's clarified now.

Yesterday's matches have concluded, and the winners are Phoenix Wright, by a 23-7 margin over Scorpion, Jill Valentine, by an 18-8 margin over Lightning, Knuckles the Echidna, by a 16-11 margin over Luca Blight, and 2B, by a 15-11 margin over Zero.

Some of my thoughts about each results:
- Phoenix dominated as expected against Scorpion in a match that every single voter yesterday partook in, and he already looks to be a strong contender to win the whole thing, again as expected.
- One expected prominent change from tazzy's format to this one is that characters prone to antivoting have far worse prospects. We certainly saw that in action yesterday, where Jill and Lightning placed right next to each other on tazzy's list, and yet the former demolished the latter.
- Luca Blight surprisingly held up quite well against Knuckles, even leading through the first ten or so votes. Does this mean the latter is doomed against 2B?
- Speaking of 2B, she showed why she earned such a high seed from tazzy's project with a healthy win over a seemingly underseeded Zero. Perhaps her match with Knuckles will be interesting, since the two placed right next to each other in the project.

Our latest set of results is: Rikku tied 10-10 with Hat Kid; Donkey Kong clapped Papyrus by a 15-6 margin; Rise Kujikawa prevailed 8-6 over A2; Liquid Snake trumped Urdnot Wrex 8-6.

My thoughts:
- Even if she loses tomorrow's tiebreaker, what a showing by Hat Kid! She was even comfortably ahead early before Rikku pulled a comeback. With such a huge placement gap in tazzy's list, it feels like their match never should have been this close, but yesterday's votals were pretty lackluster.
- DK > Papyrus feels like a repeat of Jill > Lightning, but what's really worth noting here is that DK alone outdrew each of the last two matches.
- Rise and Liquid both notched pretty pedestrian wins, though the latter, with his seeding upset, comes off much better than the former struggling in a match with a huge seed disparity.

Yesterday, Estelle Bright triumphed 12-8 over Morrigan, 9S and Zelos Wilder tied 10-10, Ren "Joker" Amamiya aced Charizard 14-7, and Cloud Strife proved dreamier than Crono by a 14-8 margin.

My thoughts:
- I would have to call Estelle's first result an underwhelming one. Morrigan slowly shaved Estelle's lead through the day, for an uncomfortably close 60-40 finish. It seems Trails isn't quite mainstream enough for this setting, even on Board 8.
- There's nothing much to say about the second match, except that it's our second tie in as many days. That 9S and Zelos are the two who tied isn't all that surprising in and of itself.
- In the last two matches, both higher seeds scored commanding wins over tough lower-seed opposition - Persona 5 passed the mainstream test that Trails failed, and we've certainly come a long way from when it was in vogue on B8 to antivote FF7 in board contests. In the process, the last perfect prediction fell. In light of our two big-ticket matches, it's not surprising that votals improved, but can they withstand today's test?

Vote in today's matches, featuring such heavyweights as Tidus and Mario along with our first tiebreaker, here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/78033863

In our latest batch of results, Tidus swam past Mega Man X 14-9, Magus and Pokemon Trainer Blue tied 12-12, Squirtle put out Mario's fire 13-11, Missile reigned over The King of All Cosmos 14-8, and Hat Kid prevailed 12-11 in her tiebreaker match against Rikku.

My thoughts:
- A solid result for Tidus, considering that he's one of the characters bound to suffer most from this format, and that MMX is not your ordinary near-bottom seed. However, his path doesn't get any easier from here.
- Once upon a time, Magus was perhaps Board 8's favorite video game character. However, after Crono went down in flames, this is about as expected against tough opposition.
- Squirtle's huge upset wasn't exactly predicted by Charizard tanking and DK excelling. Meanwhile, Missile winning isn't overly surprising in and of itself, but to prevail by such a margin against a fellow B8 favorite seems like a sign of good things to come. Both of these results pain me.
- Whoa there, Hat Kid! I think everyone can agree that expecting her to win would have been wishful thinking at best.

Yesterday's results:
- Bowser > Chrom, 23-3
- Zelda > James Sunderland, 15-8
- Dante > Ganondorf, 13-12
- Gundham Tanaka > Lara Croft, 13-9

My thoughts:
- Most importantly, votals were significantly stronger yesterday than the past six days.
- Bowser's clearly in it to win it, with the biggest blowout of this contest to date against a character who (despite his seed) shouldn't be among the weakest in this field.
- Sunderland's fans turned out early; he was tied with Zelda through the first six votes, but ultimately, avoiding the doubling is about as much as he could have expected in this format, with this level of turnout.
- Dante was smoking Ganondorf early, but the latter came back and almost made it a really good day for the Zelda series. I choose to chalk this up more to Ganondorf not being an ordinary low seed than to Dante being a fruitcake, though.
- Gundham beat Lara in a match that looks decent for both sides. Can he actually contend closely with Dante next round?

SFF

Would Chrom really be the type of character who would get SFF'd much here, though? I feel like our Fire Emblem fanbase is somewhat distinct from our Nintendo-at-large fanbase.

Also, here's yesterday's results:
- Spyro the Dragon > Nathan Drake, 14-8
- Shulk > Zidane Tribal, 12-8
- Kazuma Kiryu > Yuna, 14-9
- Yuri Lowell > Captain Falcon, 13-8

My thoughts:
- All four percentage margins were rather similar, and yet only one of these four matches (Shulk v Zidane) went roughly as expected.
- That first match in particular is rough, but Spyro has proven that he's a Board 8 powerhouse quite a few times before, so a close win wouldn't have been too surprising. It probably didn't help that I had to label Nathan Drake just 'Drake' in yesterday's match title.
- Two consecutive FFX characters have now been on the bad end of upsets in matches they (probably) shouldn't have had any business losing.
- I figured Yuri v Falcon would be a very close match despite the seeding disparity, in part because people seem to have soured somewhat on Vesperia.

- Pikachu > Max Caulfield, 10-7
- Vivi Ornitier > Raiden, 10-9
- Tali'Zorah nar Rayya > Velvet Crowe, 9-7

My thoughts:
- It's trend city today! Max (who ultimately looked respectable in her defeat) and Raiden (who almost pulled off a huge upset) were comfortably leading early, while Tali didn't take the lead until the late end of her match with Velvet.
- Unfortunately, Edgeworth was not nearly as effective in terms of pulling in votes as Phoenix.

On one side of each eightpack, Estelle and Tidus barely scraped up wins with the last few votes despite the significant seeding disparity between them and their respective opponents. A bit of a slow day for votes likely had something to do with two huge upsets, as Noble Niners that some predictors favored to win the whole thing fell in Round 2. I figured Link wouldn't do as well in this format as he usually does, but I didn't think that would mean a round 2 loss to Kyle Hyde. Rough.

Yesterday's results:
- Zelda > Bowser, 12-11
- Dante = Gundham Tanaka, 9-9
- Spyro the Dragon > Shulk, 13-10
- Kazuma Kiryu > Yuri Lowell, 11-6

I am profoundly disappointed at all of you over that first match. To go a little deeper, it's not as though Zelda characters have exactly impressed to date, so it's pretty clear that this is just a bad contest for Mario characters. Only SFF has allowed them to look good so far (and yes darkx, I admit you were right about Bowser v Chrom), and despite their high seeds, the only Mario character still standing is the one who faced another Mario character in Round 2.

In other news, Dante tied with Gundham for our first tie since the early days of Round 1. Additionally, Spyro and Kazuma continued impressing to no great surprise, but only one will emerge triumphant next round. Could that match be a thriller?

Yesterday's results:
- Miles Edgeworth > Pikachu, 15-5
- Vivi Ornitier = Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, 9-9
- Big Boss > Revolver Ocelot, 13-4
- The Boss > Luke fon Fabre, 15-3

Tali'Zorah could score a second consecutive upset, making for a decent overall contest for Mass Effect. Otherwise, I don't have much to say.
