Am I gonna get swallowed up by the massiveness of it all? Or will it be fun? Only ever been hiking on my own, never to a city like NYC. But Id imagine its just the same as travelling alone in central London.

Tips?

Go with a friend. Heck Nov is far enough away, post on facebook/craigslist etc, and make a NEW friend that would go with you (wants to go), it'll be way more fun.

I might go sometime soon, but I think it's snowing in Nov there and would rather go after the snow, but before the heat (Next March or maybe April I think). I have a friend who moved there a year ago, and I want to visit him, and get some of that yummy pizza/chinese food again hehe.

If you have not been there recently, the smell has gotten better, or at least it was better last March (I was there for my grandfathers birthday).

Could also be based on the time of year I guess (there was still snow on the ground in March!!).

Depends. When you say "NYC", do you mean "Manhattan"? Or are you thinking of spending time in the other boroughs?

Manhattan's pretty easy to navigate. And you'll be pretty safe as long as you avoid the couple neighborhoods you shouldn't be in, and don't walk around looking like a blatant tourist (ie, don't keep gawping at how tall all the buildings are).

If you're going to head into other boroughs, it complicates things.

Not sure I'd ever travel alone however on the other side of the coin I wouldn't let the lack of people available stop me experiencing life. It all depends what you plan on doing when you're there I guess.

Watch out for street hustlers! My sister and I were walking around and two dudes stopped us (we probably looked like easy targets because we looked unfamiliar with the area).

I was walking and suddenly one guy cuts right in front of me, so I couldn't walk anymore. Then I see the same happen to my sister. They separated us by like 10 feet and wouldn't let my sister pass (the guy was like 2x taller than her). And with all the people on the street, they pretty much had us boxed in. I don't know what the other guy said to my sister, but the one talking to me was trying to sell me a stupid cd. They wouldn't leave us alone until I gave them money (and I only had a $20). After that, they both ran off.

I live in NYC and I can honestly say that you'll be fine if you're alone. I'm assuming you will be going to Manhattan?

You can wander around pretty much anywhere and see interesting things and be safe. Just don't go wandering above Central Park as that's the not greatest place to be alone.

I've never been to London, but I imagine it being similar in many ways. Lots of people, lots of food, noise, a different cultures. Go for it!

I'm not sure why you'd bother just visiting NYC without any plans ahead of time. Plus if you go in October, at least you can attend NYCC.

Not sure if that's meant as a 9/11 reference. Otherwise, having been to NYC as recently as a year ago, I have no idea what that could mean... and having been to London, where I recall car exhausts smelling a lot worse, I half wonder if you got it reversed.

When people talking about visiting NYC, they never mean Spanish Harlem =p

This, tbh. But if you travel by day and in crowded areas -- while avoiding sewer gratings as much as possible -- you should be fine.

What are the key places to visit there? I'd definitely want to visit the Statue of Liberty and Wall Street(I'm sure there's really nothing to see there, but I want to visit it anyways) when I eventually visit NY sometime.
Also, WTF is up with the pizza by the slice thing? Do they even sell whole pizza at all?

I always assume Brooklyn and Queens is a possibility, to the point where I hesitate to just assume Manhattan.

Speaking as someone who lives nearby, though, I admittedly have no idea why anyone would want to go anywhere other than Manhattan. But it takes all kinds.

manhattan and brooklyn are great, i haven't been to the other boroughs much. traveling alone is extremely underrated. central park owns and moma is very cool. good food too although it can be a hassle to figure out what's available.
also, very low crime rate for a major US city.

the most annoying part is how expensive everything is

yeah travelling alone is fine in a big city.

i would recommend looking into getting a fare card and getting around on the subway though, if its anything like toronto theres no point trying to get around any other way, and you can see more of it that way too

Be prepared to pay out the ass for everything you do there. It's like 60 bucks just to go to the top of the empire state building. Museum of Natural History is somewhere around 50-60. Hell, it's 30 bucks just to go to the 9/11 museum.

You are correct, that Empire State is about $32 but not as impressive as the WTC observatory (IMO) which is about the same price.

MOMA isn't free unless you are a NY resident.. Then you can give an optional "donation" but it's not required. Same for many of the museums.

Never been to the 9/11 but it's probably around the same.

This girl I'm training at my job said there were a shitload of rats when she was in NY.

How true is that? She was only there for work so she hasn't been there a lot.
