I'd add a poll but the scenarios are too varied.

Random trinkets to furniture... offers of food... clothing... preplanned outings and vacations..

I'm blunt and just say it's an unwanted gift, unless I can find alternate usages for it.

I mean, I'm not a jerkass about it - I'll phrase it in a meaningful way.

Personally I would take offense. As I would see it as that person not truly knowing me well. I was taught and still deeply believe the best gifts are things that some one would want but would never buy themselves. Rather it be for price, the ease of purchase, or that they may feel as though the item isnt justifiable to buy.

As an example of probably my best and proudest gift was a box of blooming teas to a female friend of mine. She would have never bought those for herself because of the cost(I think it was like 50 dollars for two dozen teas), but she was extremely overjoyed by them and she saves them but she makes it a point to tell me when she uses one and sends me pictures of the flowering teas.

I dont understand the question

if someone gives you a gift you say thank you, if you dont like it you can always throw it out later

How about just getting straight to the point and say, "No thank you." It might be rude but it's the best thing to do.

Reminds me of when we gave our coworker a farewell card when he was leaving, and I saw him put it in the secure bin before he left.

If I get an unwanted gift, I'm polite about it. I could possibly regift it to someone else, toss it or just give it away later.
