15. Threads of Fate - Passing Through the Forest
Composed by Junya Nakano
https://youtube.com/watch?v=bFk3mS6VVsE

if you do I'll throw you another one when I finish listening to the soundtrack

i did in fact know this one from the last VGMC. great nom regardless! yet another track that sounds quite fusiony. well, the arrangement isn't that fusiony. but i guess the odd time signature and lush chords make it sound a lot like '80s fusion to me!

incidentally, because this was in the last VGMC, this is one where i get to see what mycro has to say about it. he says that one point, it was one of his 10 favorite pieces of music (not just VGM) ever. considering how much music he has heard, that's quite noteworthy! not surprising, though!

16. blard ~Laputa no Kaeru Machi~ - Night Sky Shop
Composed by Naoaki Jimbo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNx2wH3ArDA

this sounds like one of those songs that would do extremely well in a VGMC because it has a violin solo that's supposed to be SUPER EMOTIONAL and HEARTFELT. and then i would get mad because i don't love it as much as everyone else and i don't see what the big deal is and it keeps beating songs i like way more. (i kid, i kid. i respect everyone's opinions in VGMC! just don't say shit like "LOL THIS ISN'T EVEN A SONG IT'S JUST NOISE I'M SO EDGY" because that DOES trigger me. thank you!) anyway, uh... this is decent.

17. Ragnarok Tactics - A Mirage Enemy
Composed by Hideki Sakamoto and Takashi Okamoto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-46vZZQcc2Q

this could have been a great song but it has that !@#$ faux operatic chanting again. instead, i'd say it's merely good. i'd put it in the same category as dancing mad from final fantasy vi.

also, this made me realize i was too harsh on the devil (nice quote). i called that one "decent"? i just relistened to it and i like it better than this one! i guess i heard the chanting and my knee jerk reaction to it was "oh this can't be better than decent."

(spoilers: when i finally get to the rankings i'm probably going to redo the whole list of songs i've already ranked, my opinions on music are highly inconsistent)

18. Ragnarok Tactics - Stained Gran Tritter
Composed by Hideki Sakamoto and Takashi Okamoto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQltCW35qys

great tune, i like this one way better than the other ragnarok tactics song. very '80s fusion-ish even though the arrangement is pretty folksy. it's like if an '80s fusion band is performing and then one of the guys goes "ok here's OUR SPECIAL GUESTS" and some they get some traditional folk musicians on the stage. kinda reminds me of bela fleck & the flecktones; when you see them you think they're a bluegrass band but then you hear what they play and you're like "oh they're a fusion band lol."

but yeah, two good noms from this soundtrack so i'd definitely like to hear the rest of the soundtrack too!

hmm, i said the steins;gate 0 song was "a total pastiche of ('80s) fusion" and i think that mostly applies to this one too. i'm struggling to think of original things to say! i will say that i liked aug 13, 2036 better because the composition appealed to me more. but this one is good as well.

i guess i'll have sufficient time to listen to all of the soundtracks from this series in the next couple of days!!

20 Ys IV: Dawn of Ys - The Syonin

the first part of this one is amazing but then it gets kinda... corny and kenny g-ish (probably not the best comparison point but i couldn't think of something better to convey what i mean). good song but probably on the lower end of all the songs that sound like '80s fusion... or is it? i do love a good portion of it and it gets a lot of points for that - it's like aiming for the future in that sense. noms like this are pretty hard to rank. we'll see, i guess! in any event, this does make me want to listen to the like 86 ys soundtracks that are out there!

also, romun empire from the same soundtrack was in the last VGMC, which means mycro did a writeup on it. i didn't read it, though, because it contains MYCRO VGM TOPIC SPOILERS. anyway, i love that song and i think i prefer it to the syonin at this point. i understand that you didn't want to nominate something i had most likely already heard, though. also, the difference in preference is pretty small. in fact, i could very well see mee preferring this one to romun empire if i give it a few more listens!

now i'm wondering if i'm totally misremembering and i actually loved the tracks from this soundtrack i'd heard before. i should relisten to them!

i relistened to the trails in the sky SC songs i was already familiar with and... no, i wasn't misremembering. those were also good but the ones nfun nominated for this topic were far superior. that being said, i like all of the songs from this soundtrack enough that i want to check out the enitre soundtrack sometime!

...uh, not sure if i had anything else to add, actually, so maybe i'll do the rankings next? we'll see!

i didn't like it much. other songs from granado espada are probably better.

i forgot that there were actually two songs from granado espada in VGMC13: it's not over 1 and honor winds. i thought they were both ok and i did like them better than rhapsody. right now i'd go honor winds > it's not over 1 > rhapsody. honor winds and it's not over 1 are close. i want to give honor winds the edge because of the cool guitar solo at the end. i'm a sucker for guitar solos and you don't hear them all that often in VGM, so it gets a lot of points for that!

but yeah, i enjoyed listening to the two songs but i didn't love them so much that i feel a big desire to check out the rest of the soundtrack. so that's all the granado espada i'm going to listen to, i guess! unless nfun decides to nominate another track from it or another track from it shows up in VGMC14

as for the mycro writeups on it's not over 1 and honor winds in VGMC13... uh, he actually didn't say too much about them. he liked them, though!

Only 1.5 of these I think you'd care much about but I'm running out of ideas and am gonna need to shotgun a bit until I find a new genre because my reserves are dwindling. There are also like four more artists than these in the soundtrack; SFA just has the most and the best

At least the soundtrack is varied enough I've used it like 15 times in guessing games and people usually don't get it!

before i get to that batch of granado espada songs, it's time for...

THE RANKINGS (with some comments)

Liber Ark
Aug 13, 2036
Passing Through the Forest
wasteland
Eclipse
Stained Gran Tritter
Shinjugamori Rebel Army
A Longing to Ancient Times (Part 2)
Aiming for the Future
Bronze District
The Syonin
The Frenzy Wilds (Premium)
Setting Off Together ~ Stage One
Outcast of the Sulphurous Seas
GATE OF PHENOGRAM
The Devil
A Mirage Enemy
On Little Cat Feet

Night Sky Shop
Rhapsody
CLASS::CIEL_NOSURGE;

the only thing i changed about my initial rankings is that i bumped up the two mushihimesama futari songs. seems like i underrated those the first time.

the top six songs or so were particularly hard to rank. is liber ark really the best song so far? i just relistened to it and... yeah, i think it is! it's really freaking good. but yeah, maybe i'll switch to tiers in the future. with more and more songs being added to the list, ranking individual songs may become too hard eventually.

this has also been in one of the VGMCs, right? i've definitely heard it before.

anyway, this is ok. kinda sounds like a pretty good instrumental symphonic metal song (not necessarily one of my favorite genres but i don't dislike it either). like honor winds, it gets points for both of the guitar solos (the one in the middle and the short one at the end). speaking of which, i've noticed so far in VGMC14 is that one thing i completely disagree with mycro on are electric guitar solos. seems like he pretty much always thinks they're bad, either because he just thinks the solo sucks or (more commonly) because "the guitar drowns out instruments he likes listening to more." i could say a lot more about this but for now i'll just say that it's interesting how his reaction to these solos is the polar opposite of mine, given how similar are tastes are in other regards!

...but uh yeah, i liked this. let's see if i also like the other SZA songs nfun nominated!

24. Granado Espada - Como Loco
Composed by SFA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA4lEOzP7Gc

this song is way too trancey for my tastes. but some of it has great chord progressions and that's enough to put it into the "good" tier for me. but there are other parts that don't have good chord progressions and they kinda suck, unfortunately.

at the end, there's another guitar solo. on the one hand, that's cool and i appreciate that SFA tries to mix things up a bit from standard trance, but on the other i'm not fond of a guitar solo when it just gets dropped into a trance song. reminds me of joe satriani, in a way. don't get me wrong, i love him, but he'll never be my favorite guitarist because most of his solos have jeff campitelli just going "boom chik" on the drums ad nauseam. i'd rather listen to a frank zappa solo with vinnie colaiuta, you know, actually responding to the stuff zappa plays. interaction between musicians is what makes a solo truly great imho. but i digress.

but yeah, i do like this but i'm not of a fan of the trance aesthetic. you should stick to the style that was in laguerra del mundo, SFA!

whoa, is this SFA or jean-luc ponty? didn't expect this style after the previous two songs. this is one that gets a thumbs up mostly because it's in a style i adore (fusion). it doesn't really do anything to make it stand out in the genre. there's no epic solos or particularly amazing melodies, it's just "oh yeah this is adequate fusion i enjoy listening to this." i liked the final part where it picked up steam - that added some flavor.

huh, interesting song. what i really like about this one is how it goes from, like, instrumental baroque pop to david sanborn-style smooth jazz but it doesn't make a big deal out of it at all, if that makes sense. it happens so rarely that i come across a song that switches styles but isn't all like "CHECK IT OUT WE'RE DOING THIS STYLE NOW AWW YEAH" when the switch happens. another good example of this is the 1984 version of bamboozled by love by frank zappa. that one starts out sounding very mechanical and devo-ish and then switches to super regular rock for frank's guitar solo and it's no big deal and they just keep playing in exactly the same tempo. so yeah, i don't think this is a great tune or anything but i do like it and i appreciate it for having an aspect i love in music but almost never find.

didn't really like this. it's too boring compositionally. i think if mycro did a writeup of this song, he'd complain about "patronizing chord changes" and such (or maybe he'd think this is great, i don't know what i'm talking about when it comes to music half the time). (speaking of mycro, when i saw the title i thought this was his favorite song the other geofront (4) for a split second, which i love!) cool instrumentation but it didn't save the song, unfortunately.

great song. even though a longing to acient times (part 2) is from the original phantasy star online rather than 2, a lot of what i said in the writeup for that song applies to this one as well. some parts of it are "wahhh this is chaotic and weird mycro-ish music," while others are more "typical jazz fusion," which gives it a nice tension and relief throughout. my favorite part is at 7:09. ahh the lush chord changes are so good! almost (but not quite) as good as the chord changes in fire island volcano (that was my favorite discovery from the last VGMC by the way, i've listened to that song at least 100 times now). (fire island volcano lost to the aforementioned geofront 4, which was fine by me because i also love geofront 4, like i said! one of my favorite matches of the contest!) anyway, my only problem with this is that the plodding drums kind of get on my nerves after awhile. it's like it's a fusion band with amazingly talented musicians and... the drummer from status quo. that's a minor complaint, though.

also, relevant mycro quote from rwlh's VGM soundtrack topic:

It was my favorite soundtrack for most of the 2nd half of the 2010s (in 2020 has now been replaced with pso2 but this is still a strong 2nd place)

wow, this is from mycro's favorite soundtrack!! probably for good reason, if this song is any indication. i should listen to it! (i should also listen to the PSO1 soundtrack while i'm at it.)
