2. Power DoLLs (FX) - Eclipse wow this is amazing. not only do i adore this jazz fusion-type of VGM but this really takes me back to the mid-'90s (of COURSE this came out in '94) when EVERYthing* in video games sounded like this. back then i wasn't into music at all (i wouldn't become a serious music fan until like... 2005 actually) but i would play video games with my brother and my friends on the computer and the playstation and the nintendo 64 (occasionally) and very often the music i would hear in those games was my favorite music in the world (along with music i heard on a radio station that mostly played '70s and '80s pop that my mom always listened to in the car). back in those days i didn't even know what fusion was but now i know the japanese love their fusion and most of those games came from japan so in retrospect i'm like "it makes sense that i loved that music so much since fusion is one of my favorite genres." but yeah, not only is it "that style of music" (it gets many points for that aspect alone), but i love the melodies as well. what a great nom! also, this tune is really mycro. if someone had nominated it for mycro's topic (maybe someone did?) i'm sure it would have done pretty well. note that a song being mycro is actually not necessarily good but fortunately this is the "omg i adore this" kind of mycro, not the bad kind of mycro * well not EVERYthing in video games sounded like this there was also a lot of techno and rock and ambient and etc. but you know. when i think of "VGM i heard in the mid-'90s" i think of stuff like this, is what i'm saying. wow this track is so mycro that writeup turned out slightly mycro writeup-ish. NFUN posted... 3. OneShot - On Little Cat Feet actually this also sounds kinda mid-'90s - i could see this being the music in a night level of some super early 3D platformer. but it's actually from a puzzle game from 2014 by a company that apparently only made this game? oh well. anyway, this is good. i always love that "constantly continuing melody" thing in pat metheny music (though this song doesn't sound like him). that chime-like instrumentation in particular is nice. --- Geothermal terpsichorean ejectamenta ... 4. Phantasy Star Online - A Longing to Ancient Times (Part 2) someone speedran phantasy star II (i think) at ESA and he had to do some button combination that took like 35 minutes (well, less than that; he made a mistake about 10 minutes into the combination and had to reset) and everyone in the audience started dancing to the music in the game in the background. one of the most bizarre things i've seen at a marathon event but it was really funny. anyway, this is great! this is also pretty fusion-ish but not really in that mid-'90s way, which is more like a pastiche of yellowjackets and koinonia and the rippingtons and all those other fusion bands i love. this is more like that type of music mixed with orchestral music, and also more experimental and out there than those bands. however, it's not so ultra out there that i can't get into it. i'm not like "oh wow this sounds like if stockhausen made fusion music." (stockhausen i never got into even though he was a huge influence on zappa - sorry mycro.) but yeah, i like this song even better than the phantasy star II soundtrack (which i thought was very good as well). more music from this franchise should be in VGMC! NFUN posted... 5. Mushihimesama Futari - Setting Off Together ~ Stage One this sounds kinda like 2000s trance which is a type of music i never got into for the most part (some of it is great, though). i do love the instrumentation, however. it's much better than "typical trance." and some of the melodies are fantastic and manage to put this tune into the "great" tier! (no i'm not going to look up where in the song they appear. sorry guys i'm writing this stuff on autopilot. if you want good writeups on VGM go to mycro's topic.) NFUN posted... 6. Trails in the Sky SC - Aiming For the Future oh trails in the sky SC. i think this is a soundtrack mycro really likes but i never really saw what the big deal was (though i do remember liking the songs i've heard). the first half of this tune is great. again, it sounds fusion-ish but it seems to be inspired by some micro(mycro?)genre of fusion that i can't entirely put my finger on. it's more "out there" than those bands i named earlier but it's not quite as intricate as return to forever of tribal tech or planet x either. this is more like... steps/steps ahead, i guess. or vital information. yeah, i guess those bands are pretty decent reference points. "somewhat 'out there' fusion bands that started in the '80s," is what i'm going to call this genre. BUT the second half i can't say i like. i don't even know how to describe what it sounds like - cheesy synth music that plays on a CD-ROM when it explains how to install something? *thinking emoji* on the basis of the first half alone i will still put this song in the "great" tier, though! all that being said, this is definitely better than the trails in the sky SC songs i remember mycro talking about. dang it, mycro, why didn't you ever bring up this one?!? (you probably did and i just forgot or didn't listen to it.) --- Geothermal terpsichorean ejectamenta ... Copied to Clipboard!

7. pop'n music - man if this is the kind of stuff you listen to for fun you have no right to call macintosh plus "annoying" >_> i'm not a fan of the whole "3000 beats per minute" thing - i never like it much when kirby music does this either. the parts that weren't that frantic were pretty good, though. and the instrumentation was nice. ok song overall i guess. i could see myself liking this more if i listen to it more often. NFUN posted... 8. Phantasy Star Online - The Frenzy Wilds (Premium) well this certainly starts off incredibly well. remember how i said the other phantasy star online song wasn't a pastiche of fusion? the start of this song totally is (with a minor difference in that i don't really associate percussion with that kind of music... well, aside from the marimba in spyro gyra and mike manieri's vibraphone i guess). but then it becomes more ambient - also nice. oh, we're turning again NFUN posted... 9. Mushihimesama Futari - Shinjugamori Rebel Army i adore most of this song - it's like eclipse. fusion + amazing melodies = what more could i ask for? ...but the flute part i didn't like that much. it's like "hey let's insert a fusion remix of a boring folk song right in the middle of this." so it loses points for that. still, great tune and i agree that it's better than the other one. another soundtrack i should lisen to in its entirety. good job manabu namiki. --- Geothermal terpsichorean ejectamenta ...
