Parents at an Illinois High School are OUTRAGED after dozens of female students returning for the school year had already VIOLATED their school dress code policy by exposing their SHOULDERS!!

On Wednesdays, girls at Glenbard East High School were already ordered by admins and change into a school su pply room with t-shirts after a female dean said they were "showing toom uch skin"

Chloe Lynch said "I was told i should cover up because boys were looking at me"

Several of the girls who were accused were wearing sleaveless tank tops and t-shirts with sheer sleeves as temperatures soared to 82 degrees on the first day

That outraged parents who said their daughters have previously been allowed to wear tank tops on warmer months.

One mom said "This isn't like years past. This is totally a different year...There was no warning. I think that they handled it very poorly. It was very appropriate, it made students feel uncomfortable, it made them feel sexualized and i think that was wrong."

Lynch says this was sexist and said "It made me feel very much discriminated against in terms of gender, because it was clear there were boys wearing muscle tees where it was not just their shoulders being shown"

Males stood in solidarity as one said "I believe in general its a sexist policy..just the idea that men are all pigs that are looking at women throughout the whole day is just a sexist message"

But the school isn't backing down that says they are EQUAL to both genders as it says clothing considered to be revealing and does not adequately cover the front, back, side shoulders or midriff is prohibited

They said they will continue to "educate" parents on the rules as any student continuing to show too much skin could be SUSPENDED

Would you want to live in a society where girls can't show off their shoulders?

Probably not.
At least at my school they were very double standard with that.
Granted I graduated high school in 2003. But I don't see things changing on that front sadly. Haven't noticed it changing. It seems like the reason pretty much always boils down to 'but you're distracting the boys'.

Honestly if I was a girl in school and someone tried to make me do that, I'd remove my shirt and bra and say "there is that more appropriate?". It's not illegal, and the school shouldn't dictate what you can or can not wear.

I guess a private school might be different if it has specific rules before you join etc, but public schools? They should not be able to restrict what you wear. Honestly think you should be able to go naked if you wanted.

The thing is when my daughter was going to school in the 00s, her teachers wore really short tops that exposed their midriffs (and belly button piercings). When I pointed out that inconsistency in the dress code, I was told that 'teachers are employees and don't have to abide by a dress code' whereas the students did. I was always taught that teachers were responsible for being an 'example' to their students; not the other way around.

Enforcing a dress-code that prohibits exposed shoulders or midriffs in school is perfectly fine. These kinds of requirements can be a great way to prepare kids for real world jobs with similar dress expectations. There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to instill a little dignity and restraint in a learning environment.

It does kind of suck that students would have to miss the first day when the school didn't give them rules. Especially after apparently changing them, though...

I mean that is the schools fault for not informing parents if that is indeed the case but it's still nothing to get hot and bothered about. Maybe I'm getting old but folk turning up without the correct uniform and being sent home was happening when I was back at school around 16 years ago.

The difference these days though is the internet gives a voice to those who really shouldn't be heard. They do it for attention to validate their shitty existence or maybe they really are that stupid. Media outlets love getting these "news" stories from social media too.

Idk much about that. I only went to one school with uniforms. Other than that, it was kind of where whatever you wanted to. People wear tank tops were bad. Still isn't. But school clothing polices are batshit crazy these days...

Though, since the school did change the policy, they should have informed everyone. Especially since it was hot and they knew people would probably wear similar items to last year during the warmer months.

While some do stuff like this for attention, others may do it because they feel it's wrong. And in some cases, it really does seem wrong. If we keepe letting things go this way. Schools will be telling girls to wear sweaters during the summer or Niqbs all year long or something...

Yeah it's rare for UK schools to not have a uniform. Personally I think uniforms are great as they stop bulling and get kids prepared for the real world. Still as I've said the only issue here is the school apparently not informing the parents and you can choose to see this anyway you want but it seems like attention seeking to me. Again it's nothing new.

So yeah. A security guard told a young lad to put his shirt back on once when he was walking around the shops as kids are around. i rolled my eyes so hard I'm sure they went to the back of my head. Still policy is policy.

In the US, it's usually only private schools that have uniforms. Or schools like private schools. Public schools are usually just wear clothes. Or use to be like that... Well, some are. These weird school with these new rules feel like outliers. But that's just because I haven't seen any with these ridiculous schools in real life...

Funny how they are always covering stuff like this as if the coverage will make the school change their dress code or something. When a school is pushed so far as to enact change, all they are going to do is make everyone wear uniforms. I had to do that in middle and highschool and it sucked, dang teens dont know what they could have to put up with.
