Well there's the whole tactical aspect where you order your pieces around the board. It's not all just talk.

I don't know anything about mercs really. Just that it's imaginary and people vote on who wins I think?

Spend money on video game characters
Use their special powers
Fight other teams and argue who wins
Make more money, rinse and repeat for like a year
eventually quit over interpersonal drama and/or rules interpretation

Mafia Game where Town Players all start with X amount of money.

At night they can spend their money at the General Store where they can purchase abilities like a 1 Use Watch or Track or Doc Save, etc.

Nights following a Scum Lynch Town gets paid and increases their funds to give them the chance to buy additional powers for later use.

Sounds like the kind of game that would collapse into a chaotic disaster when partway through everybody realized that no one, the host included, had been interpreting the rules correctly

If you or anyone else want to play diplomacy I'd love to run an online game!

There are a number of free sites that let you just sandbox game boards and/or host private friend games ( https://www.backstabbr.com is my favorite interface personally )

I typed up a much longer sales pitch then felt like I was hijacking the thread too much. But TL;DR is that it lets you flex a lot of the same muscles as forum mafia but the time commitment is way less

I guess I should clarify, when I say less of a time commitment, the game will probably last longer than a typical mafia game but it just requires less attention throughout.

Well yeah but if you play it in one sitting it's like a 6-10 hour game.

The way it goes is you have rounds of discussion where you're allowed to just talk to the other players and make alliances or make enemies or whatever, then everyone submits their orders for where and how their armies and fleets will move on the board. You process all the orders simultaneously (and find out who kept their word and who betrayed you, etc) . Then that cycle basically just repeats until the game is over.

So in the face to face game, each round of discussion is 15 or 20 minutes long. For online you just expand that phase to be 1 or 2 or 3 days or however long you want.

I mean if you all would rather pick a Saturday or Sunday and play it live that's even better. I just assumed that would be less feasible.

Ok, that makes sense.

Me and my friends would have risk games like that one summer. We probably ended up playing like 20 different risk games over the course of a summer. We had it setup in my buddy's parents garage and we would play until something came up, we all go do whatever came up then meet back to continue our games when ever we were all free.
