Both were great, but I'd give the slight edge to the ds

i think I like the 3ds better than both, but you really can't go wrong with either of the three options. And all are leagues better than the gameboy/gbc

Thats a joke right? Technically right but the gba did play gameboy games. I played the zelda oracle games on it. Which is probably the best gbc had to offer unless you where a major pokemon fan.

I never had a ds though. Fortunately thr 3ds plays them. I'll eventually beat golden sun dark dawn.

I can't think of any good games I owned for GBA outside of Pokemon, Minish Cap, and remakes of SNES Mario and Zelda.

DS was kind of the same, though.

3DS absolutely mopped the floor with each, though.

I read the GBA comment more like GBA was so good that even though it wasn't compatible with the DS slot they added another slot so you could play them. GBA could just play GBC games without any addition.

But maybe that was just my understanding of the statement and not what they meant tbf.

I have around 30 DS games and maybe 12 GBA games. The GBA also lasted, what? 4 years before the DS came out? Almost every single worthwhile GBA game had sequels on the DS as well. I love the GBA, but nobody is convincing me to pick it over the DS.

GBA has better games but the SNES games ported to GBA should have been on the DS instead (like Chrono Trigger) since all the SNES ports are generally inferior (minus the extra content).

The GBA-SP is still quite possibly the greatest handheld console ever made. It had great battery life, a super-compact form, an incredible library (including SNES ports), and decent enough specs.

The DS-L had better specs, but was larger, frailer, and it never seemed like the technical capacity justified the larger size. I compare it more to the 3DS, which does almost everything better but has a worse battery life and loses GBA BC.

My favorite GBA games include:
MMZ3 (and the franchise in general), MMBN1-3, Pokemon FRLG, Pokemon RSE, Metroid Zero Mission + Fusion, Pokemon Pinball: RS, and Monster Rancher Advance.

Including ports, there's also LttP, SF Alpha 3, and iirc one of the KOF games.

My favorite DS games include:
Custom Robo Arena, Contra 4, MMSF1&2 (haven't played 3), Monster Rancher DS, and... idk, Bleach: Blade of Fate. Been a while since I used the DS. The two Zelda games on it were alright.

Yeah, but a bunch of them are glitchy on the DS to the point of freezing up during certain segments (in addition to losing link features). Plus the GBA had GB and GBC bc.

And, honestly, even for some of the stuff on both systems, I tended to prefer the gba version. Even with modifications, I find the MMZ Collection worse than its individual GBA counterparts (although at least the DS cart doesn't have batteries that can burn out)

I think I have a lot more GBA games than DS games, but it's hard to know. It could be around 100 gba games vs 60-70 ds games.

...what? The gba was well-configured for snes ports. Offhand, I can't think of any snes ports that might have been better off on the DS due to a hardware issue. In most cases, it was more a problem with something being sloppily ported. A great case-in-point involves something from the Genesis (ie, same 16-bit): Sega's awful Sonic port where fans created a better version.

The DS has more depth in its library (and is probably better overall), but the GBA is definitely my personal favorite.

Obviously if you include BC the DS gets GBA games (and the GBA gets GB/C games, which isn't as good IMO), but that makes for a crap comparison. The DS has better hardware too of course.

So basically, the brain says DS but the heart says GBA.

Some of my top GBA games:

Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission
Mega Man Battle Network (mostly 2, 3 and 6) (Double Team DS is also cool)
Castlevania Circle of the Moon and Aria of Sorrow (the DS ones are arguably even better on average if you include HoD with the GBA ones)
Legacy of Goku II & Buu's Fury
Mega Man Zero 1-4 (think there's also a collection on the DS)
Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1/2 (also A/D/J/R for JP only games)
Advance Wars 1/2 (supposedly the DS ones are good)

The GBA was not strong enough to port SNES games perfectly while the DS was strong enough, hell you could even emulate SNES on the DS, just not at full speed.

There's not a single SNES game ported to GBA that I played that looks exactly or close to the same except FF5 (FF4 looks good but was a Wonderswan port). DKC 1-2-3 looks horrible, FF6 was ok but washed out (the singer in the opera scene was pretty good tho) and the 2 BOF games were decent but inferior graphically again. All SNES games on GBA had less colors, inferior sounds, lower resolution and often smaller sprites. The fact that the ports were sloppy is a good sign of the limitation to port SNES games on the GBA, fan made stuff was better but not perfect as well.

Genesis is not "same 16bit" as the SNES...Genesis as much less colors and much crappier sounds...something that the GBA had less trouble to do, obviously. Again, the DS was strong enough to ports SNES games perfectly; Chrono Trigger is a very good example as is looks exactly the same as the SNES version while GBA ports were always inferior.

The GBA with native games was awesome tho....ports are expected to need more ressources so SNES games on GBA being inferior never surprised me.

Arv is wrong here. GB and GBC games are mostly crap, so backwards compatibility is irrelevant. GBA has some gems, but it's got nothing on DS.

Ok but if you were alive during that time period that was the only way of playing those games unless you somehow had a Super nintendo that still worked, a game cartridge of said game which cost atleast 60-80 bucks and then batteries if it's save slot didn't work anymore

compared to buying a gba game at the store 29.99

idk, the DS was too busy badly porting/remaking N64 games to ever bother with SNES ones. And the LttP port clearly proves that the gba was up to the task.

It was an example of why shoddy work done by a company isn't a reflection on the hardware, especially when fans in their free time can make a better product.

It could have easily been done on the gba.

I loved Donkey Kong Country (saw it at a friend's house), but my parents didn't get me a console until the N64. I was thrilled to get to play those games finally.

Impressive! I think DS or Gamecube is my largest physical collect. PS4 is definitely my largest overall, but that's cause of gnarly digital sales
