But even one of the first ads in the US for the game highlighted Pikachu as a semi-mascot for the game. He was driving a bus

I get where op is coming from, it is honestly kind of strange that Pikachu is at the same time the series mascot (to say the least) but basically just a stepping stone before becoming Raichu in the actual games at least the main series.

But personally I don't think it's a big deal and disconnects like this can be fun in a way.

Besides, it's not like anyone actually plays the games, right?? I thought we are so over random battles since three decades ago.

Does anyone know anything about balloon (flying) Pikachu in Gen 1? It was featured in Yellow's opening alongside Mega Kick, Surf and Thunderbolt.

But as I understand it, flying Pikachu didn't exist internationally outside of the TCG, Pokemon Snap and Puzzle Challenge. In Japan it was a promotional event for the CoroCoro magazine and only 20 were given away for RGB (what?).

I dunno, that Lt Surge episode in the tv show was really emotional when it dealt with the possible evolution of Pikachu. It dealt with the fact that maybe Pikachu couldnt beat anyone stronger anymore because of who it was. Def one of the better episode of the series because of that.

Although I havent watched the show or anything in almost 20 years so I dont know if anything changed. Maybe you mean Pikachu physically cant evole anymore and I missed something

I think it was before the actual show had really become a phenomenon so most people didnt have any attachment to the characters lol. I remember constantly seeing that on tv and not being phased by it, but its a little freaky now. Also the bus driver looks kinda like Chris Farley

It's funny how they chose a mediocre and useless Pokemon as their mascot.

Its evolution is far more useful, but still mediocre.

After you catch one, you stick it in the PC until your acquire a thunderstone, evolve it, and then stick it back in the PC.

It was basically a last-minute decision for the anime. Clefairy was likely to be Ash's starter and Pikachu would have just been another mon but they felt Clefairy wasn't as marketable IIRC. So they changed Ash's starter to Pikachu and the rest is history. Notice how, in red and blue, Pikachu isn't special in the slightest? That's because originally he wasn't special. It wasn't till Yellow that it had any degree of speciality and even then it took quite a bit to become notable in-game beyond the yellow exclusivity.

Yeah. I will say if just playing single player though Pikachu was good enough. I beat the entire elite 4 with him alone. Didnt even have surf on him either dealt with brunos rock types with body slam iirc. He was the toughest fight.

I was always mad that you couldnt really evolve Pikachu in that game though and if you did go out of your way to do it he stopped following you around. Even as a kid I thought raichu was cooler even got a plushie of him somewhere ive had since I was a kid.
