It's weird, because up until this recent hoopla, I've never heard it called "8chan" before. It's always been infinitychan to me.

I mean, it's still around, you just have to use Tor to access it. And I'm sure the clearnet version will be up again by the end of the week, probably on a Japanese host or something like that where they don't care about racism.

2channel was the original image board from Japan
4chan (now 4channel) was the English based website made by Christopher Poole, who sold it to the guy who made 2channel in a twist of fate. The two sites are unaffiliated.
8chan got popular after 4chan cracked down on certain activities (this happened around GamerGate)

There's a lot of chans out there, actually. I'm sure there's a list of them on some wiki somewhere

2channel was not an imageboard. It was a textboard, no images allowed. It's also dead now and has been replaced by 5channel.

Thanks for the infomation, I have learned some things. I could have sworn 2channel had images though. Is there another popular anonymous JP imageboard? I've seen screencaps of a similarly formatted site with images attached to posts.

4chan but without the shitty mods deleting every decent thread

Apparently when 4chan started policing child porn and other illegal/unacceptable stuff some people got upset and made another "free speech" website.

Of course that "free speech" just became a concentration point for stuff that should not be anywhere.

Currently it seems to largely be a website where white nationalists radicalize would be terrorists in a way similar to ISIS.

8chan was made because they thought 4chan wasn't edgy enough for them. Gamergate discussion was banned there and the creator of 4chan said he doesn't want the site to be a platform for activism after the scientology thing a few years back.

Yeah, futaba channel (aka 2chan) is the Japanese imageboard moot originally ripped the source code to create 4chan for. Another misconception is that futaba channel is big in Japan though, it's not, it's a puny site.

Right on. I still remember when 4chan had text boards. Never used them, but they were comfy for lurking. The slower rate of messages changed the atmosphere quite a bit.
