I've never read a single novel of his, so if I start one I want to make it count.

I wouldn't recommend starting with It. That's a lot to take in right off the bat. So is The Stand, but that has a less digressive narrative.
I haven't read either, but I think that Carrie and The Shining are the most highly regarded critically. Maybe Misery and the short story collections too. --- Congrats on Advokaiser for winning the 2018 Guru Contest! Yesmar ... Copied to Clipboard!

I'd recommend The Dark Tower series as the answer to the initial question, but if we're just talking one book here... gotta go with The Shining.
Maybe The Stand, but it was the first book of his I tried (and failed to finish) and it was a long time ago. Too young to slog through the extended edition. Should probably give it another chance. ... Copied to Clipboard!

The Dark Tower is considered his ultimate work, but not his best.
The Stand is generally considered his greatest as far as written works. My personal favorites are IT, The Stand and The Girl who loved Tom Gordon --- FC: SW-8288-8096-1115 ... Copied to Clipboard!

For a singular book then I would say The Stand as well but I've always liked his short story collections way more than his books outside of the like 3-4 major ones that he wrote.

As a whole it's The Dark Tower. For a single book it's The Stand, though IT makes a pretty compelling argument as well.
