Looks like the Patriots are re-signing their starting QB. Seems like a risk to employ someone over the age of 40.

Lots of things have happened this offseason:
AJ Green will miss some games with foot
Antonio Brown is apparently hurt with a foot
Ryan Fitzpatrick is currently set to start over Josh Rosen
Melvin Gordon ('s agent) is currently demanding a trade unless he gets a new deal
Zeke Elliot is holding out and jerry jones says **** you we don't need you

And more!

While the "you don't need a star RB/WR to win a super bowl" argument is technically true if we look at the last 20 years or so of super bowls, it's kind of a skewed stat because the Patriots have been involved in a lot of them and they do things differently than every other team in the league.

Hm, let's see how accurate Jerry Jones is.

Super Bowl 6: Duane Thomas, 95 yds rushing with a TD. (Also 74 yds rushing out of Walt Garrison)
Super Bowl 12: Tony Dorsett with 66 yds rushing and a TD.

And ya know. Tell me Aikman would have won 3 Super Bowls without Emmitt Smith (and like a dozen other super key players, but still)

Jerry Jones doesn't even know his own team's history.

Not to mention teams that are set up like dallas is DO actually need a star RB to win a super bowl. Dak imo is good, but he is not that type of qb who can carry you, nor do they have the receiving corps to do so either. They are built to run the ball, so it's just asinine to call out zeke like this.

Jerry's a dumbass, tell me something I don't know

(Granted, Zeke's also a dumbass for trying to hold out this year when he'll still be under contract next year regardless and he needs another year to qualify for UFA, which is why I would be surprised to see his holdout extend beyond Tuesday)

Wait, hold up. Are you saying Jerry Jones is wrong?

Hes 100% correct. In this day and age you dont need a top rb to be a successful team. Yes, Zeke makes them better, that's obvious. But rb is the least important position in the NFL right now (please dont come at me with LONG SNAPPER or something you know what I'm saying).

The fact that even 75 year old Jerry Jones recognizes it says all you need to know about the position.

This post is absolutely and 100% correct when applied to the Cowboys specifically

Just look at how shit the team was when Zeke was suspended for six games a couple years back.

A generic NFL team can be successful and win a Super Bowl without a top RB. The Dallas Cowboys as they are currently built cannot.

The team as currently built cant win one no matter what. They are facing an awful situation of a contract extension of a QB they are unsure of, a WR they've only had for 8 months, and one of the best players at his position but that position meaning less and less every season. Jones holding his ground and seeing what Dak does in a prove it year is smart imo

I should add a few takeaways from the HoF game.

So Drew Lock played with 5th string players. The only player who showed competence on offense was their RB. (And honestly, Khalfani Muhammad looked good, just definitely not Royce Freeman/Lindsay good.)

In 11 passes, he threw 7 completions and if he faced a good defense, he probably would have thrown at least one INT, as one DB or LB, didn't check the player dropped an easy pick when it basically came right at him. Lock is not accurate at the long ball currently. He overthrew every 15+ yard pass. To make matters worse, Brett Rypien, an UDRFA from this year showed more promise in the long ball regards. That said, it was basically a learning process to get Lock to practice more with people running routes, and could have been him playing with people he wasn't practicing with. We'll get bigger names in the real first post season game.

I just watched every Lock play, so nothing really to comment on regarding Falcons side, but really, does anyone care about Kurt Benkert? Didn't think so.

I'm going to admit up front that I'm biased as a fan of the team, but I really do think they have what it takes on both sides of the ball this year. I wouldn't call them the favorites by any means, but I think they absolutely have what it takes to win one this year (and next year) specifically, before the contracts all run up and they have to overpay a bunch of guys to keep them. Beyond that, the window is probably closed depending on who they re-sign and whether they replace Zeke with somebody anywhere near as good.

I'm curious to see what Kellen Moore does, but aside from that I cant picture a world where they beat the eagles for the division (barring injuries) and a wildcard will be tough to come by with how stacked the NFC is. Rough schedule as well

Zeke has made a lot of boneheaded moves in his career, but holding out is not one of them

if he doesn't get a new contract, Dallas is perfectly content to run him into the ground and let him go to free agency where he'll get relatively little

I think I'll make note of some things that occur per each preseason game regarding watching highlights. First things first: My boys the Seahawks.

Seahawks had trouble on early drives, which of course, is credit to the fact that Wilson didn't play and instead it was Geno Smith, he had some good plays, but also nearly threw two interceptions in a row (which were still against 2nd-3rd CBs, which means they would have been pick-offs in real games). Their first core defense also showed some bad holes as Flacco easily drove the Broncos upfield, but still failed to reach end zone.

Nothing productive happened in Geno vs Hogan, the real battle was former Bronco rookie and current Bronco rookie, Paxton Lynch vs Drew Lock. Lock had an absolutely BEAUTIFUL fake at one point in the game. No one could see the ball, and it was a 4th and 1 situation, so massive clutch moment. Now Paxton, Paxton had a great game, passed and ran for two TDs, had some great throws a couple of moments and looked like a great back-up. Showed that he knows he's competing for a job and did everything he could to make it work. And like I thought, looks like a competent QB in a system that actually is built for a younger QB to succeed, unlike Denver.

If you'd like me to study any of your team, or any specific players, I'll be looking at some highlights today and you can ask me to look for some specific people.
