Board 8 > My phone died, permanently, just after my dad said "I have bad news"

I'm not at my house, and I cannot remember any of the passwords to anything but this (memory functions are dumb), and the house I'm at has no house phone, so I spent two panicky hours trying to fix my phone (no dice, it's probably a motherboard issue) before I realized I could use the Alexa to call my dad's phone. The first time I tried, he didn't answer, which I assumed was because the cell service where he is right now is terrible. I tried again just a little while ago, and he answered.

My nana died.

She fell down the stairs and she died.

Her sister, Shirley, had brought her groceries this afternoon, and Nana wrote her a check. Shirley got home, maybe a 35 minute drive, realized the check was for the wrong amount, and called to give Nana some good-natured shit. Nana didn't answer. Not unusual, not the first time. But she kept not answering.

Shirley called my aunt, who is on vacation with her family. She called my uncle John, who is on vacation with his family. She called my dad, who is on vacation with my mom. She called my uncle Jimmy, who was free. He found her at the bottom of the stairs.

Because she was found, and alone, I guess the police are involved as a matter of protocol. Normally this is a formality, and is typically handled by the local police, I assume to determine a cause of death and to rule out foul play or suicide? But for some reason, maybe because they had nothing better to do, the state police assumed jurisdiction and have possession of her body.

She was 84. We had the same birthday.

I just stood up for the first time since I found out.

I thought I was gonna fall over.

Then I started to cry while I was petting Zelda when I realized that Nana was the only person in my family I told about my Jeopardy audition, and the last time I talked to her, she was calling to make sure it was still hush-hush with the rest of the family.

I am so gifted at finding the worst possible outcome, but this... this was not on the list.

My granny was found in a similar situation. It was health reasons rather than an accident, but still sudden and unexpected. My cousin who found her was 8 years old. :(

she was healthy, relatively speaking

lived alone, had a dog, still drove. she had incredible anxiety, but physically she was in decent enough shape.

I was fortunate I guess (fortunate really sounds like the wrong word here...) that both my grandparents that have died had declining health over a long period of time so it wasn't a shock. My father-in-law died suddenly though and that was much more traumatic for the family.
