So the final AC odyssey dlc came out.

They've lost their fucking minds.

For those who want spoilers:

you know Layla hassan, the girl you play as in modern day stuff in origins and Odyssey? Well now she's a super powered villain driven mad with power. And otso burg, the Templar merc guy who's been in the series for a long time, got injured and went into the animus(setting up the next ac game which is rumored to show the origins of the Templars) and he is now the "hero".

Wtf are you doing ubisoft.

...Huh. Was it established that an artifact called Shroud of Turin has the ability to revive people before? I could see it happening in that case.

Anyway, seems like the writing is really crazy but I guess they're trying to force the idea that the Assassins and Templars aren't necessarily "good" and "evil" forces.

It's technically called a shroud of eden as there are more than one, but references of it have been strewn through the series:
Assassin's Creed II (Gylphs only)
Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy (first appearance)
Assassin's Creed: Syndicate
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey The Fate of Atlantis: Judgment of Atlantis

From the AssCreed wiki

According to analysis by Abstergo Industries, when a Shroud is wrapped around a body, it scans it for damage, then reconstructs it on a cellular level, enabling potential reconstruction of decomposed organisms and, possibly, resurrection of deceased members of the First Civilization.[1]

It had been used to attempt to bring humans back to life with no success but since Desmond has some First Civ blood in him it could indeed be written in. I do hope they go that route

I haven't beaten it yet so I'm not revealing the spoiler, but casual reminder there was only ever supposed to be AC1, AC2, and AC3 (and AC3 wasn't even going to be the AC3 we actually got) and then Ubisoft got money-hungry and started adding in games and completely destroyed the original vision for the series.

Oh it definitely retconned just about everything, but ubisoft themselves hadn't given a shit about lore in nearly a decade either.

That's something that Mass Effect got really bad about.

Jacob and Miranda were from a phone game, though ME2 is a strong enough product that their introduction is fine whether you know about their origins or not. But their friend Ish is also from that game, and he sticks out like a sore thumb - it's some real Remember The New Guy shit. Then there's the Shadow Broker DLC with Feron - he's a flat character, and his chemistry with Liara is barely there. The main appeal of Feron is to those who read the comic book about Liara obtaining Shepard's corpse.

But things really went into overdrive with ME3.

James Vega: Anime movie
Kahlee Sanders: Books
Emily Wong: killed off-screen during a viral marketing campaign
The Illusive Man: Backstory explained in a comic book (which I just learned now using Google Fu)
Kai Leng: Book villain, worst character in ME3

The 7th generation of video games were lousy with video game novels. Kind of a shitty period imo - it's interesting in how video games tried to make that leap into becoming big multimedia properties, but it all went to shit when game studios started folding external lore into the core video games.

Mass Effect 3 gave a terrible first impression because of this

At the very first scene you talk to James Vega as if you know him, there are no introductions or easing the player into his character. I was just like who the fuck is this and should I know him?

Jacob and Miranda were ok because Shepard didn't meet them until the player met them. If you're gonna have extra lore, make sure it doesn't involve the player directly

What was the original vision for AC3?

It was supposed to largely take place in the Modern Day with Desmond essentially having become a "super assassin" through all the training in the Animus.

Now whether AC3 was always supposed to involve the American Revolution is another matter entirely. Patrice was already working on Brotherhood when he quit from Ubisoft.
