A lot of people are just used to getting dropped in a world and the game walking you through everything holding your hand.

FROM drops you in. Gives a few hints and let's you loose.

But the upside is that theres no path. You discover as much of the game as you're willing or able too.

I never understood the difficulty with him. His moves are so telegraphed it's easy to parry. I honestly had more trouble with the witches than I did with Guac

The conundrum with the good Father is that he's basically the "this ain't your Dork Sauce anymore" player check. Once you slip into Bloodborne's more aggro mindset, he's not too bad.

I mean, that's the point. If you don't learn to parry you're screwed, but once you have it down, you realize how essential it is to the combat. He's Blade Wolf from Metal Gear Rising.

Gascoigne is the gatekeeper boss for Bloodborne. If you understand the game's mechanics, he's fine. If you don't, you're gonna have a bad time until you do understand them.
