Hello everyone, and welcome back to Best of the Trope!

Here are the rules. Each day, I will post a trope from TV Tropes, and each poster can name up to three examples of that trope. Whichever nomination gets the most mentions wins! Posters may also name as many Honourable Mentions as they like, but they are purely optional and will not count towards the running score. You may look at the TV Tropes page for that day's trope for examples, but you do not have to pick all your examples from the page. You can nominate whatever examples you like, as long as they qualify for the trope. Each trope will last around 24 hours before the next one goes up.

In the event of a tie between 4 or more nominations, a tiebreaker poll will be run the next day to determine a winner.

One person or group considers another person or group as their rival, and will not allow anyone else to be the one to defeat them. This can sometimes lead to them helping their rival against other enemies, justifying it with a lame excuse, to make sure that they survive until the final battle between the rivals. Sometimes, this trope can become the basis of a HeelFace Turn. It also frequently leads to Not So Different and Antagonist in Mourning.

This is also the one-sided obsession of the Unknown Rival. It's also (usually) a big no-no on the Evil Overlord List (see #117).

This may be motivated by respect given to a Worthy Opponent. It can lead into Foe Yay if this excuse is used too much; and opportunities to defeat the rival are not taken.

In some cases it can simply be fueled by pure pride, as a more egotistical villain will find the mere thought of someone else taking credit for a goal he has worked so hard for utterly insufferable.

TL,DR: A rival or villain will stop someone else from beating the hero because they want to do it themselves.

I don't understand all these Bowser votes. When did Bowser ever stop someone else from defeating Mario? Heck, he has his entire army of minions trying to do it constantly. Sure I guess you could argue that's him indirectly but still

Such as? I looked at the Mario section of the trope page and the examples listed there aren't all that memorable IMO

Edit: I just figure there's gotta be more than what's listed there for him to have all these votes

I mean the RPGs where the two team up to defeat a bigger threat count.

But my first thought upon reading the trope name and TLDR description was someone like Voldemort, who flatly refuses to let anyone else kill Harry Potter, even if they offer. But the full description doesn't really match. He doesn't help Harry in any way, other than ordering he be kept alive until they are face to face.

The trope often leads itself into Enemy Mine.

Also, the implication from the characterization he gets seems to be that while he wouldn't mind one of his minions defeating Mario, he really doesn't expect it to ever happen. It's sort of a far less explicit version of why Vicious from Cowboy Bebop would count despite allowing waves of minions to try to kill Spike.

The trope often leads itself into Enemy Mine.

I just rewatched the scenes in SMRPG and SPM where Bowser joins your party. In the former he seems more motivated by getting his castle back and in the latter he refuses to join the party after Peach invites him until she points out that his minions are brainwashed.

Neither one really even resembles today's trope IMO
