A British-flagged oil tanker has been seized in the Gulf by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Iran media say.

The owners of the Stena Impero, which was bound for Saudi Arabia, say they have been unable to contact the vessel and it is "heading north towards Iran".

The company says there are 23 personnel on board and it was approached by "unidentified small crafts and a helicopter" in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Foreign Office is "urgently" looking into the reports.

The government's emergency committee, Cobra, is meeting in Whitehall to discuss the incident.

This latest development comes amid heightened tensions between the UK and Iran.

Not sure it's "arbitrary" as such.

Clearly in response to the one that was seized near Gibraltar. But almost 100% chance no other reason though still.

They took a second ship too:

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/19/british-oil-tanker-reportedly-seized-by-iranian-forces.html

President Donald Trump said Iran may have seized two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz Friday, after Irans Revolutionary Guard says it seized a British tanker and several news outlets reported a second British ship was heading towards Iran.

War with Iran was inevitable under a Republican president, especially Trump considering his and Kushners ties with Israel, AND especially guys like Bolton and Pompeo got huge roles in the administration. Not to mention they want to do it in his first term considering who knows if he'll be reelected and the inevitable unpopularity this will bring. It's only a matter of time

"Arbitrarily"

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard-affiliated news agency said the tanker was seized for breaking three regulations: shutting down its GPS; going through the exit of the Strait of Hormuz rather than the entrance; and ignoring warnings.

UK is weak as fuck now, not even Iran respects them. Now they will expect us to bail them out.

Yeah, they have no reason to lie or act in spite due to Britain taking one of their own tankers.

Nope, they are being 100% honest here! They investigated themselves and said they found no wrong doing! wait, I mean...

It's more a failure on the UK's part due to evidently not doing anything after repelling an attempt by them to do this only a few days ago.

It will only get ugly if other countries get involved.

What could UK do, get Nigel Farage to say racist things? Pull out of the soccer World Cup in protest?

I can't imagine Iran would do this just for the hell of it, because the UK up to this point has been very vocal about *not* wanting to join an anti-Iran coalition with the US. So it's just not in Iran's interests to take a British ship without a legitimate reason.

The analysis I have seen is that they are playing a very dangerous game of trying to impress upon the world how hard Iran could make their lives in one of the most heavily used shipping routes in all the world.

Given that they have also told the EU that if they don't pony up enough money to offset America's sanctions in the nuke deal, that they will continue to gradually degrade their compliance until they are making nuclear grade weapons material... it is pretty clear that Iran is pushing hard for sanctions relief.

What exactly is the legal basis for the UK applying its own trading restrictions on other countries?

Furthermore, what possible motivation would Iran have respecting sanctions when they themselves had sanctions reinstated despite fulfilling the terms of the deal that got them lifted?

You can do your own research on this if you're interested. They violated EU sanctions that they had in place regarding Syria.

They were suspected of breaking EU sanctions, so got detained in British territory (Gibraltar) Which is amusing given Brexit.
