Essentially, a lot of the things people valued has sort of deteriorated or lost value and now all that's left is jokes. People are depressed, horribly so, and so the only way to face the pain, or at least bottle it down, is to laugh. It's why anonymous imageboards are so popular, because it's full of jokes (and most of it is extremely offensive) and that's typically all these people have anymore. Family isn't enough to keep them stable, someone that would love them (girlfriend OR boyfriend) is seen as too insurmountable to ascertain. All they have left is jokes. And these offensive jokes make them immune and desensitized to human empathy and compassion. That's why when they reach their breaking point, it's not a breaking point for them - it's a joke. It's all a joke.
