The latest on the sentencing of 30 y/o Former Grad Illinois Student, Brendt Christensen for his grisly murder and DECAPITATION of a Chinese Student has been called off for the day as deliberations will continue tomorrow where it appears the jury is TORN on whether to sentence him to DEATH that the Chinese family of the victim and the prosecutors are fighting for!!

Jurors went home without a decision whether the doctoral student should be put to death as the judge sent them home.

It only took them less than 90 minutes to find him guilty but the death sentence is deadlocking the jury.

Among the questions they must answer in the penalty phase is whether he displayed unique cruelty in how he killed Chinese Scholar Yingying Zhang.

The defense said while he admits he killed Zhang, his life was a LOVING, GENTLE child and other POSITIVE characteristics that should spare his life and that he was going to leave prison "in a casket" no matter what their decision as they are trying to HUMANIZE his persona.

His father also went up to the jury and BEGGED them to not kill his son as he cannot "bear" the thought of his son being sent to death. Brendt began to cry for the FIRST time which was the first he's ever shown emotion in court.

But Yingying's family were less forgiving as the mother cried out on the death of her daughter as her father said this was a "step forward justice" who demand him be sent to death.

It happened in 2017 when Brendt pretended to be a police officer and lured Zhang into his car and took her back to his apartment where she was going to see a landlord about renting an apartment that day.

The muscular Brendt dragged a 5'4 Zhang into his apartment and began beating her with a baseball bat and then began choking her and then DECAPITATING her and hid her body in an undisclosed location which he wont reveal..

Records show he was researching how to "kidnap and kill" someone on the internet as he searched through the deep web in search of ways to kill someone as it was his FANTASY to murder someone. He was the last person to see her that day as his car was caught with him luring Zhang into his car.

His girlfriend wore a WIRE to bust him as she was hesitant at first but wanted to do the right thing. Recordings overheard Brendt tell her he wouldn't kill her because she was too "HEAVY" to hide and that he killed Zhang out of THRILL of being a serial killer..a dark thought he dreamed of doing. He also described Zhang being "valiant" as she fought back and scratched him before he bound her..He pretended to be one of the "worried" people and went on a search for her after she disappeared as well and went to vigils. He also claimed that Zhang was his 13th victim though there's no evidence of any other victims.

Illinois no longer has capital punishment but he is now tried in federal court.

Zhang had only been in America for 2 MONTHS as it was her and her family's dream for her to make a career for herself and to make her family proud.

If you were on the Jury, would you vote Life or Death?

Everyone is this when they are caught with their pants down. Doesn't mean they don't deserve a good spanking so a life for a life seems fitting.

Capital punishment.

I'm guessing some on the jury are just opposed to capital punishment in general, b/c anyone who isn't opposed to it would readily admit this dude deserves it.

And it's frustrating how we frequently see defendants beg for life in prison, cut plea deals to take the death penalty off the table, etc... and yet the people who oppose death penalty will still claim life in prison is a "worse" sentence, despite the constant examples of it clearly not being considered worse.

So I guess we should do the merciful thing and just execute him, then.

Prison should be for people who have at least some potential to be rehabilitated and be functional/useful to society after being released. Serial killers are not those people. Even if this was his first kill, sounds like he would have continued if he didn't get caught.

By that logic, why not execute everybody to end to their suffering?

Well, the point of my response was to show how ridiculous and stupid it was to view execution as the more merciful option compared to life in prison, so....thanks for inadvertently supporting my point?

It's more merciful but it's also more barbaric. At any rate, your "argument" is generally ridiculous and stupid, just like the death penalty.

TIL that juries decide on the sentence if the death penalty is a possibility. I thought it was always the judge regardless.

And sawing someone's head off isnt barbaric?

This guy researched how to kidnap and kill someone, planned it out and ripped the choice for life forcefully from this girl, he doesnt deserve life after he's so willing to take someone else's life. And to boot, he claims this is the thirteenth victim.

Purge the earth of this scum.

To be fair, Zeus has consistently been anti- death penalty in every relevant topic I can recall. I disagree w/ him, but can respect his view.

But his assertion that the death penalty is more merciful than being held in prison is fucking laughable.
He'll never admit he's wrong on anything, so I'm happy w/ just getting him to prove my point so easily.
