In a utility aspect, out of gen one I think squirtle would be the best. Water on demand, swim, and its various attacks would be more beneficial in a real would sense then the other two.

This is my signature, there are many others like it, but this one is mine.
If you take 110% of what I say seriously then you're gonna have a bad time.

Contrary to popular belief, Bulbasaur is actually the best starter in Gen 1.

I always pick Squirtle though because I love water type Pokemon.

In Gen 8, I'll be picking the fire starter though. Scorbunny look so adorable.

I like squirtle the most.

But actually none of the starters in gen 1 were top tier

Bulbasaur's advantages include:
-Poison subtyping, which means he's immune to being poisoned, a common and annoying status condition
-Type advantages against the first three/four gyms (SE vs Rock/Ground, SE vs + resists water, and resists electricity... and he resists grass for Erika's gym, although he needs to use non-grass moves). In general, he has a type advantage of some kind vs 5 of the 8 gyms.
-Evolves to final form at an earlier level
-(Gen 1) Has access to Razor Leaf which, under Gen 1 mechanics, had a 100% critical hit rate (which also bypasses stat changes)
-(Gen 1) Has access to Sleep Power which, under Gen 1 mechanics, caused Pokemon to lose the turn they wake up.

Granted, between the starters from all games, I think Mudkip has more advantages.

The games have tons of good water types which render that benefit minimal. For starters, Gyarados is a better pick.

Mudkip is awesome in gen 3, although I like Torchic for Blaziken.

All the Kanto starters are solid picks you can't go wrong with. But my fave grass starter is Treecko, my fave water is Squirtle and my fave fire is Fennikin.

I tried Treecko the first time I played Ruby, but wound up switching to Torchic and then from where I used Fire starters up until Gen 7/SM

I played LG a ton of times and I think he has the most interesting level-up movepool. It's so easy to one-shot stuff so my playthroughs often have me using a lot of status-effect moves.

My problem with Squirtle is that there's a bunch of nice water types in Kanto so basically you just getting a early water type. Blastoise has great defenses though and one of the reasons for that is that it's pure water.

Charmader is barely disadvantaged in FRLG. You get metal claw to help with Brock and you can always temporarily skip Misty's gym. I remember on one playthrough I came back and swept her with Charizard. I guess it's a plus that you don't need to carry around a bird for fly.

I haven't been following Pokemon meta in a while, are Speed Boost Blaziken or Protean Greninja the best starters competitively? I know Mega Venusaur was really good too.
