So I've just found out that apparently WhatsApp is like...barely used in America

I thought everyone used it everywhere, like it was just the go-to messaging app for people

I used it when a friend of mine lived in Europe for a while but that's been years ago now. Haven't used it since.

I used it a lot when I lived abroad in Europe and the UK. Also Viber.

I never use it now that I'm back in the US.

But my wife is British and she still uses it to communicate with her family.

I used to use (and I say that in like the loosest definition of the word) it... but tbh I dont remember why. I think it was because it might have been preinstalled on my phone because google or something.

As I said in discord, in the UK - and especially Qatar - no WhatsApp basically means you don't communicate, period. My school RAN on Whatsapp group chat last year. Cover lessons, duty timetables, everything was done via whatsapp group

it's fine. only use it with people traveling outside the u.s. or people from outside the u.s.

maybe it has some kind of features that make it superior to texting or whatever but i just haven't learned about them yet

I use it a lot for big group chats which is primarily during NFL and NHL season for our fantasy year since our NFL one especially has like 14 people in it.

I was invited to use line before from some people I met over in Thailand.

I'm Korean & my parents and all their friends use Kakaotalk as it's easier to switch between English & Korean keyboards

I had it when I lived in UK but didn't use it THAT much. I use WeChat now because everything else is basically blocked in China. WeChat works everywhere and it's not bad.

I use it. I have friends in different countries.

I also use it for big groups that cant fit in a group text because of limitations.

it's completely replaced texting for me lol. if it's related to my work life, social life or my family, it's all done via whatsapp these days.

I use it to call/text people overseas who'd rather use that instead of Facebook Messenger for whatever reason.

I used to use it all the time for all of my group chats, but for the most part those have all migrated over to Instagram which I think is much better.

The GIF selection on Instagram is great and it has the native ability to send people's posts to a group chat which is very convenient.

I've heard of it but the only reason I've even heard of it is because of coworkers who aren't from the US.

I can't remember where I first heard of it but the only time I've seen someone use it is one Canadian guy who uses it to send and receive pictures of rare comics to and from people in his community around the world

in northern and central jersey we all have pretty great cell service and nobody talks to anyone from too far away so we all just text or use FB or snapchat or something

Vouch that I've pretty much never seen it used in the states. My friends pretty much exclusively use Messenger and Discord.

Out of curiosity, are there any particular features that have made it THE communication app elsewhere? I do find it interesting that its synonymous with social life elsewhere but nobody in this country gives a toss.

Yeah. I use regular texting for both work-related stuff and with friends.

Google hangouts is only with my immediate family, because when we originally got cell phones it was the default texting app and we just use it by habit now.

I have like a million or maybe infinite texts included in my phone plan so theres no need to use some other app for normal messages

Brazilian companies are giving free SMS with their data packs now, but by the time that became a thing, Whatsapp was already omnipresent. So it's dead here too.

Wow I certainly did not know that. WhatsApp is basically omnipresent where I am.

People tend to be aware of it at least, but it's not much of a thing here (NZ). I use it to contact family when they're away and that's about it. Otherwise my friends foolishly attempt to contact me via Facebook or Discord, or plain regular phone calls. I also have LINE installed but don't know anyone else that uses it here which is a shame.
