I noticed the Amazon Fire was like $30 or something and I wouldn't mind getting a tablet to read some digital books. I have seen a Kindle before and really liked how it looked but I was just curious what people here used, if anything.

I don't - I hate reading books on a computer screen.

I just use my regular laptop to read the rare occasional .pdf file acquired for really rare or hard-to-locate books , but 99.44% of the time, if I'm reading a book for any reason, it's made of paper and ink.

I bought the Amazon Fire 7, but I just found reading books on those screens annoying. Plus I was trying to use free books through Project Gutenberg or something similar and the support for that was naturally pretty awful, which was probably part of the problem.

And, generally speaking, I prefer print anyway.

A 4th gen Kindle Paperwhite. I can't read on a phone or tablet with constant interruptions from notifications, and IMO the Paperwhite has better contrast for text since it was purpose-built.

Kindle Fire.

It works a lot better than my HP Jornada PocketPC that I used years ago. And I was able to transfer my book collection. Plus occasional bargains on Kindle books from Amazon, and my local library has an ebook lending program.

I'm in the same camp actually, rarely use my fire, tried it out wasn't a huge fan. Pretty much only use it when I reread the few books I bought for it.

I prefer physical books as well, but I'd be willing to use a digital device since digital books are very cheap.

So are actual books, depending where/how you get them.

I'd be getting books on Amazon mostly since there's no book stores close to me anymore. Specifically, I was looking for and bought a magic the Gathering novel since I had the first two but not the final book. Got a used version for like $14 while the digital version was $6.99. Then I saw the Fire on sale for like $20 or whatever it was and decided to ask here what people used.

I have read a small amount on a Kindle and I know I'd be perfectly fine using one of those to read, but they are expensive.

I've used an off brand e-reader for manga and it was alright but I'd rather just use a tablet or smartphone.

I use a kindle fire hd with the moon+ reader app which I had to sideload from apk.

It does wear on the eyes after a while, I'd much rather have one of those e-ink readers.

I picked up a (non-HD) Kindle Fire in 2017 and have been using that for both reading e-books and streaming video. Still eerie that Amazon had it configured specifically for me even before I took it out of the box.

I prefer reading physical books, but there are things that are only available in e-book format.

I use a kindle paper white. If you really just want something for reading, get the kindle, paper white or the oasis. Paper white I think is the best of 3 (considering the cost of the oasis).

The Kindle Fire is more of a budget tablet. You can use it to read on, but the others are better for reading and won't cause a strain on your eyes. If you want to do more than read though the fire can do it. I actually did use a Fire for quite awhile, but I found myself too distracted when I laid down to read.

I have 2 Kindles that I use regularly, a Kindle Oasis (2nd gen) which I use at home, especially in the bathtub since it's waterproof, and a Kindle Voyage which I take to work or when I go places where I expect to have to wait, like the doctor. I also have a 2nd gen Paperwhite which I've configured for visitors to be able to use; it's locked down in kid's mode so they can't really do much besides read. I still have my Kindle 1, 2, and 3, but I don't use them for anything anymore.

Yeah, I guess if you're looking for specific titles, you're kinda out of luck unless it's something popular. There have been a few times when I picked up a book for a buck or less, but then got stuck wanting to get the sequels which would be nowhere near as cheap and, in the case of Dragon Weather, probably aren't worth buying.

Which MtG novel, btw?

I have about 500 paper books. They took me decades to accumulate, take up about 28 shelves, and cost me tens of thousands of dollars. I acquired that many e-books just last year, they all fit in my pocket and cost me only a few hundred bucks.

I actually prefer reading on an e-ink reader. The fonts available on the device have been carefully chosen, I can pick the one I like best, and I can adjust the size and density of the print. I have a few paper books that are nearly unreadable because the publisher chose a horrendous font that hurts my eyes. The exact same book on my Kindle is in Bookerly, font size 2, medium density, narrow margins, justified, same as every other book on my Kindle. My Kindle is also waterproof, so I can read in the bathtub or at the beach, places I'd never risk taking a paper book.

There are some books that I think work better in physical form. Mainly reference books like dictionaries, medical books or cookbooks. Anything where you flip back and forth between sections, this is much easier to do with paper than with current model e-readers.
