I ran a google search, but the results were telling me 3-4 years and that just doesn't seem like it could be right. (And some of the sources were places that either make or sell laptops, so I figure there might be a vested interest there.)

How long should one last? 10 years or more. Usually when a laptop dies it's because someone broke it by doing something stupid, or it wasn't ventilated well and broke due to heat damage.

Old laptops generally work like new if you replace the hard drive and battery.

Depends on many factors, build quality, work environment. I have a notebook that's about 15, it still works although the plastic is rather brittle and it would need a new battery if I actually wanted to use it on the go.

Completely based on user. A laptop used for gaming or other processes that will cause it to heat up(not over heat, just to cause high usage) will always have a shorter life span than one that is used for lighter usage.

I have a Gaming PC for my harder hitting stuff and only use my laptops for streaming media. And I always buy ones with removeable hard drives as they will often fail before the other components and its cheaper to replace an SDD or an M.2 drive than a whole laptop

As in it's still going or you're not sure when it died?

Besides gaming, what generates high heat?

Rendering is a big one. Just open your task manager, anything that causes your CPU/GPU/disk usage to go above 70%ish is bad.

Never had a laptop die of normal use (other than battery). The only one that's not functional is the one I left near a window for way too long and the screen died of sun damage.

I usually expect 3-4 years. The hard drive in my current one decided to die after only 2, but I blamed that on the fact that it keeps waking itself up from sleep mode for no reason, which has caused it to get pretty hot when it does so while inside my backpack. I was able to replace the hard drive (with some difficulty; this was not a laptop that was designed to have components replaced), though, and it's still going after 4 years, including some time spent as a desktop replacement while my desktop was out of commission.

This laptop is pushing eight years, but I use it primarily for writing and surfing the Internet. Many of my Steam games will only run on it in short bursts, so I try to keep gaming on it to a minimum.

Hate to say it, but I think my primary (well, the primary one around the house, not the one I bring to work) is officially dying. It had randomly been having some issues a few days ago and, on either Saturday or Sunday, the screen had blacked out for a while and it seemed so I unplugged it and let the battery drain... and then, after kinda getting it going again, it blacked out and I unplugged it again (which I'm worried interrupted some function). It's only semi-working now and is sluggish as hell, either freezing or taking too long to do basic shit.

I can't remember when I bought it, but it's not a super old laptop. Spybot Search & Destroy program -- which I figured I'd try since I can't remember what I had been using -- notes that I last used the program 1737 days ago (which is 4.7 years). So I'm guessing that laptop is 6 years old tops. But now I've got to figure out what the fuck I want to do for a laptop or whether to go back to a normal PC for my primary home device.

If the laptop was in even reasonable condition, I might try to get fixed instead but at this point the chassis is completely busted where the screen connects to the rest and the battery has been pretty well shot for a while so it just seems easier to get either a new computer or laptop.

I leave mine in a place that kinda gets hot so I'm wondering if it's taken some damage there..
