episode 01 - get a (load of these)

Shinji is not having a good day. First, the women in the erotic picture seems to be running late, and then he gets spooked by Rei, only to end up almost immediately catching a glance of an Angel. LUCKILY, the "UN" is here to UN-angel tokyo! Direct hits are scored, but their weaponry is as effective as ze goggles. Gendo knows this, but he lets the generals bark and thump their chest anyway.

Misato finally rescues Shinji (those shades) and they trade owns, with Misato noting that Shinji is sensitive and Shinji calling her immature. The angel is grotesque, I don't enjoy looking at it. I love Shinjis sullen "im told he has the admirable job of defending humanity", a mix of hating that his father is a man of importance who has no interest in him, and shame over his feelings of hating a man with such an admirable position. Misato and Shinji bond over their shared daddy issues, as we enter NAERV.

The own don't stop, with Shinji dunking on Misatos terrible sense of direction and Misato saying he, like his father, sucks at making himself seem endearing. Shinji and Gendo finally reunite after all this time, and its quite beautiful. Gendo tells Shinji he is sorry for all the time he has wasted, and that he will never leave him again, and Shinji finally feels like he is wanted and loved.

YOU'RE WRONG!

okay, so Gendo only invited Shinji here because he has to pilot the EVA and kill the angels and loves to manipulate his child's emotions to get what he wants. Misato is the only one who seems to think this is fucked up, but quickly begins to understand the options are limited and starts condescending to Shinji to be a big boy and things like that. He even brings out a severely injured Rei to manipulate him by telling him that if he doesn't do it, she will have to. As things get more serious, the EVA protects Shinji from harm, and he eventually agrees to 'get in the robot' after being treated like a human chesspiece. all according to keikaku

Episode 02- out of the frying pan, into the Pen

"Just walk." It turns out that piloting a robot is difficult. Shinji faceplants, and the Angel goes straight to ripping off his arm. "Stay calm - it only FEELS like they are ripping off your arm" well I'm convinced. Somehow this doesn't assuage him and Shinji seems to lose consciousness. As shinji wakes - "I don't know this ceiling."

Gendo gets scolded by the HIC and told not to let the appearance of the Angels stray his focus from the human instrumentality project.

Misato muses about how air conditioning is mankind's greatest achievement. They learn Shinji is awake but lacks memory of what happened. Misato meets up with Shinji at the hospital and they encounter Gendo - who merely looks down on Shinji in disgust, while Shinji refuses to acknowledge him and stares at the floor. We learn that Shinji will be living on his own - it is normal in the Ikari family, and he prefers it that way, but Misato doesn't feel comfortable with this arrangement so she has Shinji live with her. "It's not like I'm gonna try anything with some kid!"

After buying as much alcohol as I do from the store, Misato takes Shinji to an observation point where the city can be seen - he finds it empty and sad. Misato seems to find more value in it - saying it's their city, and the city Shinji defended.

They arrive at Misato's apartment, an absolute wreck of a place covered in alcohol and various garbage. Ice, snacks, beer are all she stocks. She slams back a Yebisu, declaring it the thing that makes the day worthwhile (here, here!) and after making Shinji uncomfortable, lashes out at him for being so boring/subservient. Shinji goes to shower, staring at Misato's underwear as Pen Pen makes his first appearance. Shinji is startled, and Misato explains Pen Pen is their roommate and a hot springs penguin. The visual gag with the jars covering Shinjis penis is great, and he retreats in shame.

While asleep at night, Shinji notes another unfamiliar ceiling. "There isn't anything in this city that I'm familiar with." We see a flashback of the fight - after Shinji lost consciousness, the EVA took over and defeated the angel on its own. Shinji let's out a scream after witnessing his EVA regenerate it's eyeball, which then focuses directly on Shinji. As Shinji lies awake in bed, having recalled the events, Misato thanks him for saving the city. His city, according to Misato, but Shinji doesn't feel like he saved it and certainly doesn't feel at home right now - between his complete stranger of a father who rejects him, his completely new environmental with his "job" as an EVA pilot, having to live with an adult women who barely has her shit together and embarrasses him, or his new Penguin roommate from species unknown, Shinji's life has him feeling very much like a fish out of water.
