This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if both members of said duo are named in the title of a game (Banjo-Kazooie, Sam & Max Hit the Road, etc).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Gabrielle:
-Non-mascot character from a fighting game most people have never even heard of, let alone played
-Google brings up mostly ertyu videos, confirming nobody knows who she is, not even a cult (Chester) or ironic (Jay Solano) fanbase
-Only existing images seem to be an extremely generic looking character select screen icon and an even more generic looking in game model

Boys I think we have a winner for the weakest character we could conceivably rally in. Wanna do it?

well even a mid fodder character is capable of winning a match with lucky bracket placement, so I'll consider that a rating of Low Fodder.

Gabrielle doesn't seem to have a decent picture to use for a match. I could maybe see her beating the likes of Chester and Spring Breeze Dancin' if she had a good pic. But as is she would be the weakest possible character to have in a contest. She honestly might get 10% on Tanner.

Serge is Mid Fodder. He was pretty weak in his only appearance and I don't see him being any stronger today.

Spongebob I say is Fodder Line. Nostalgia for the early seasons of the show is probably pretty high on Gfaqs, and there are literally hundreds of memes from the show. Some of his games like Battle for Bikini Bottom are not bad either. Spongebob himself is iconic too.

Serge: High Fodder if only because Chrono Cross looked very respectable in 2015, and as the main protagonist, I don't think Serge is all that much weaker than his game.

Gabrielle Espinoza: Finally, someone who Draven circa 2018 can actually beat, even though a whole third of GameFAQs automatically antivotes him at this point! In other words, Low Fodder, of course.

Also, I know this is straying a bit from the subject, but bear with me: Tanner doesn't deserve his reputation as the shittiest of fodder. His one match was against Snake back in 2004, which seems like a dead ringer for massive SFF. Obviously, a generic McDude from a less-than-relevant series with a highly questionable name isn't remotely strong and never was going to be, but I would at least argue that he was (and maybe still is) merely generic Low Fodder.

SpongeBob SquarePants: I say High Fodder because he seems to have hit that effective combination of nostalgia and continued relevance, helped by a few well-received games.

If you flip him with another 15/16 seed, he probably still ranks last, but likely not the statistical outlier he ended up being.

Driv3r ended up being a pretty mediocre game attempting to catch up with GTA series and failing hard, so it's hard to imagine him winning against any else in the 2004 bracket.

Gabrielle Espinoza: LAW Tier (LAW stands for Low Ass Weak fodder)
Spongebob: Fodder Line, though I wouldn't waste time with any fictional characters that don't have any critically acclaimed video game hits.

i like tanner having the bad rep because it keeps us talking about tanner, i personally love the driver games and think it's hilarious that his claim to fame is getting SFF'd to hell and back in one contest in 2004

CJayC insisting on using full body pictures was the greatest bad aesthetic choice for a while. I mean, Tanner can't exactly not look like a generic McDude because that's what he is, but at least zooming to his torso might actually show some hint of a personality.
