You can get an ultrasonic denture cleaner like they use at the dentist that does a better job than brushing alone can, but won't be as powerful as the dentist's. Your best bet is to get the dentist to clean it, then get in the habit of brushing it regularly. You can make that more effective by getting one of those ultrasonic cleaners and/or using denture tablets, but you really just need to brush it. Ask your dentist for a denture brush, which will have stiffer bristles better suited for brushing them.

Toothbrush and toothpaste?

I mean it seems pretty obvious. If it is good enough for your teeth, it is for your retainers.

I have part dentures and a soft toothbrush with soap and water cleans those. Also rise after eating. I assume it's the same for these. Your dentist should tell you these things.

Not toothpaste as that would ruin them and don't use a hard brush.

Yes because retainers are made of bone.

Let me rephrase. Retainers are not made from the same things as natural teeth are. I will use high fluoride toothpaste of my natural teeth but never on my part dentures as those are way to harsh for them and could scratch them. Soap, soft brush and water is the best for those and after a google search the same does indeed apply for retainers. Also if you take them out at night put them in warm water. I have a "denture bath" that works well for stuff like that.

I bet he just told the dentist how wrong he was and proceeded to ignore everything he just said.

Probably. I mean it wouldn't be dirty if he took care of it.

I brush them every night, there's still a good amount of plague that's built on it and I have to scrape it off

Should be twice a day and rinse them after you've eaten to stop shit building up on them. You can also buy cleaning tablets I believe although I've never tried those as I have no need.

I got lazy and then I ended up with the dental issues I had. Still it goes without saying the more you look after something the more it will last in most cases.
