Will be interesting how this turns out. Daniel Craig will still be James Bond, but Lynch will be 007 (since Craig retired in the plot of the last one). Not sure if Craig will be done with the series by the end of the upcoming movie, and Lashana Lynch will carry on as the lead of the future movies.

The thing is they recast Bond, not 007. It's very unlikely they'll continue on the series without James Bond as the titular character. It's an interesting move, and will probably add something unique. The first post in this topic likely has the correct plotline for this movie.

oh ok i didn't think anyone cared about my thoughts, but here they are @LeonhartFour

So let me first say that I'm not a huge James Bond fan, I've seen a random smattering, like 8 or 9 movies total. I only ever watched them with my dad or uncle and they both have different favorite Bonds so I've seen a good variety.

I have some opinions on the casting but they're more general feelings on the franchise

If they make it that James Bond 007 is just a title that is passed on from agent to agent then I'm fine. I literally don't care at all. But they have to then canonize the previous Bonds and acknowledge them somehow which I don't think is a problem but I'm sure it will cause some kind of continuity issues. I don't care about that at all but some will. From what I've read this is what they're doing.

However, I always felt that it was a wasted opportunity to expand the James Bond universe and formally introduce a variety of Agents.

It would be best to just keep Bond a white guy, and 007 is always a white guy named James Bond, and then you always have 003 who is named, uh, Jason Chen or something and he's always an Asian dude and 006 who is always a black lady named Jessica King (idk I'm not paid to write this).

Then they all have their own franchises and occasionally the actors get retired and replaced and they can cross over and stuff and occasionally bring old actors back for cameos in this big universe they've created. Have Q and M in every movie. Have Pierce Brosnan show up in some of them to say hi. Have Bollywood make 005 the Indian James Bond. But they won't do that probably. idk there's a ton of market real estate for more cool spy movies, especially if each 00 has its own unique style or spin.

I think it actually is kind of important to have a generic white guy agent because he's supposed to be a super secret white guy spy and sometimes you need him to just blend in. It's also important to have agents of all varieties for all kinds of missions. Sometimes you need a lady. Most times it doesn't matter who you send though which is why I'm all for a black lady spy, but you gotta do it right. A lot of people like that James Bond is just some white dude because the entire point of the character is that he's a white male power fantasy. But I'm sure Asian guys want their own Asian male power fantasy.

"Power fantasy" may not be the point anymore, but I do have two friends (one white, one Asian) who hated Skyfall because they specifically see 007 movies because they want to see Bond be an unstoppable force and don't want a character breakdown/study that shows him aging. That movie broke a ton of box office records and then Spectre didn't do as hot but idk if any really felt this way outside of a minority of weirdos. Spectre shouldn't exist tho imo it kinda sucked and didn't really build off of Skyfall enough.

I didn't even see Spectre until I was stuck on an airplane with nothing to do and I've skipped a ton of Bond movies because if the previews don't look good then I don't see them. If they do have Lashana Lynch play Bond and the trailers look like shit I probably won't see it until I can pirate it.

I'm probably a bad person to ask about this because I don't think I think about Bond the way most people do. Again, I really don't care if Bond is a black lady, I don't care who is cast as him or her, I'm just bothered that they waste the potential to really build up the movie franchise to be something more. I also think the market is still there for white guy Bond so it baffles me that they'd change it. We also have a ton of people asking for Idris Elba Bond so why not try that? Lashana Lynch is a weird direction all of a sudden. Could be fine though. Could also not happen, how definitive are these rumors?

It will never be the same but it will be different and give people more room to experiment. Star Trek DS9 was seen as "the one that isn't TNG or Voyager" but the team was given more creative freedom as a result and now a lot of people see it as far and above the best star trek

I think they are going to test a slow progression by keeping Craig in this one, as well as introduce her as a potential permanent fill in for 007, and then based on the perception of the movie, either abandon the idea if negatively received, or go ahead with it if well received.

Agree with ulti on poor actress choice too, although zendaya and letitia Wright need to age up a tiny bit more but they'd probably be fine choices. Danai gurria would be good but I don't think she's British (zendaya definitely isn't). Keeping bond British is more important than his race or gender imo

Man, if you want to go with someone perfect for a Bond role that breaks the mold, Henry Golding from Crazy Rich Asians would be a perfect choice to supplant James Bond as a 007 who has the panache and suave, debonair quality of a Bond without having to be "white guy James Bond".

Yeah

I was actually thinking earlier today it's a clever compromise. You take a franchise that is starting to look a little bit...idk, socially outdated or whatever words you want to use, and do something like this to - but you don't completely change the series so you don't have the entire movie's buildup dominated by "omg Black woman Bond" or "omg Jane Bond" or anything like that and risking a potentially vicious backlash. Craig-as-James Bond is still going to be the main character of this, but 007 is literally just a codename and anybody can have it. Smart move.

I guess #3 can be a woman who seduced men (or women) in the same way as the previous Bonds, but this is going to come off as ludicrously stupid. Also who the fuck would want to see a chick use hunky men like that? Men certainly won't be interested and 90% of women will hate it too.

This is going to be a total disaster.
