Clearly, most of them are just playing along with the joke. But I'm sure plenty of them are serious and actually think it's ok to break the law and storm a military facility just because they want to see what is there.

Holy shit! I didn't realise this was a thing, but that's exactly how a kid at grade school ran. I just thought it was something that made him faster... which it kinda was as he was the fastest kid in our year. So i started doing it too and it made me faster too!

Right, that was kind of my point. This is literally one of the most secure places in the world, are they expecting super secret alien technology to be just sitting out in the open? I imagine them all running in, getting to the first locked door and being like "Wow, we really didn't think this plan through very well."

Yes they can. But they don't. People get detained and fined on a regular basis for trespassing there. Of course, those are usually just people who pushed a little too far for a neat picture or rode their dirt bikes in the wrong direction etc. They usually get handled by the private security that maintains the border of the base. Not a mob of people with the intent of rushing and overtaking the base.

Basically, this.

Stupid people have built Area 51 up far more than it's ever really been, and even if it HAD been significant in any way, it hasn't been significant for decades (why would you KEEP hiding sinister secrets in the place that literally everyone knows is the place where you supposedly hide sinister secrets?). There's almost certainly nothing worth finding there at this point other than a normal military base (and let's be honest, there's never been alien stuff there period, deranged conspiracy theories notwithstanding).

But if stupid people want to rush the place in an attempt to get in, then stupid people are either going to get arrested or shot. And absolutely nothing of value will be lost.

It takes more then just joining the military to get in I think. Though nothing of intrest to the general public (ie alien tech) it is still an advanced R&D base of the airforce and military. So I am pretty sure clearance to be allowed to enter is high.

The real problem is that it's rarely just a case of the government keeping secrets from citizens, as much as it is the government keeping secrets from potential foreign powers/enemies.

Very few people will come out and protest how hard the government clamped down on nuclear secrets when working on the Manhattan Project. We all generally sort of agree on some level that you probably want to hide what you're working on there, and you definitely want to hide how you achieve whatever you accomplish, especially when the guys on the other side are literal Nazis. It doesn't really make sense to tell everyone you're building a stealth bomber - and how you're doing it - so that they can immediately start working on countermeasures. Like it or not, there's a sort of implicit need for secrecy when it comes to developing military tech.

The real problem is that people have built up this huge artificial mental image of exactly WHAT secrets are being kept. So even when secrets are later revealed, no one ever believes them.

And ultimately, the government is completely fucked regardless. If they revealed every single government secret ever, conspiracy theorists would just ask what secrets they're still hiding behind the illusion of total transparency.

What we see on satellite is the runway and a few hangers. There could be alot more to it then that.
