the little of it that I read in the preview reads pretty well. it doesn't have that amateurish feel that I would expect from a lower quality book. (might be different if I read the whole thing though who knows.)

I don't mean this as insulting but is this selfpublished or did you get picked up by a publisher? And if self published how hard is that process? I had a short story published in college and it took forever. It was such a pain to get published I don't think I'd ever do it again. I can't imagine getting a full novel.

Getting "published" on Kindle is pretty easy. Just about anyone can do it. Being a digital medium there's almost no cost involved to doing it so there are no costs for Amazon to recoup. More importantly, a lot of published authors aren't on their initial run and aren't big enough names that their works are always available at book stores. My first draft took about two months and was 166k words. I almost never write that fast.
In the past two days, according to KDP Reports, ten people have paid for copies. Then there are the Unlimited/free copies, for which I'm supposed to receive royalties per new page read. Hmm... --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

I downloaded the kindle app and found the book, but it's not giving me the option to purchase only an option for a "free sample", which I think is trying to sign me up for some kindle book club or something. I'm going to see if I can buy it through my browser later.

I wish I had the time to edit this for you, or that you could afford a proper editor. I enjoy the concept and setting, but to give you an idea of how much editing this could use, I would cut the first two chapters in their entirety.
There are too many characters vying for the reader's attention at the onset. Too much dialogue. That's an issue of taste, and will not bother every reader, but for stories involving strange races, names, and concepts, I prefer when a writer introduces these elements at a slower pace, giving me time to familiarize myself with the setting. I'm not exaggerating when I say the first two chapters can be striken, and the story would not suffer in any way. The third chapter is when you begin to exhibit qualities of a more seasoned writer Your prose is wordy, with some paragraphs that could be reduced to a single sentence. For example: Dylan saw the woman who entered the room. Instead of pointed elf ears, she had a pair of elongated, hairy ones like a rabbit. Had it not been for those, Dylan would have sworn she was looking at a human from eastern Asia. Could be written as: A woman with rabbit-like ears entered the room. If we take the above example and rewrite both that paragraph as well as its preceeding one (which I'd post but I can't highlight the text on my phone), you could distill two paragraphs to: A woman with rabbit-like ears slipped into the room, stopping to cover her mouth in disbelief. You can see why I never finish my novels... The story is interesting, and I'm not saying that to soften the blow. I think there's potential, and more than that, you accomplished something I could not. Congratulations. I hope your future works receive the editing they deserve. ... Copied to Clipboard!

One reason I've been hoping for greater success by now is the long list of other novels I have yet to finish. I'd love the motivation and free time to work on them all without needing to worry about employment, but here we are.

Hey everyone. Kindle unlimited is free for 3 months right now as part of the prime days thing (don't have to be a prime member to get it I don't think).
Anyway, if you get it, you can get Entity's book and she gets paid for it. Gods, can you imagine? So many people going through Unlimited and running through the pages I could support myself in a 1-bed apartment in Seattle if I wanted to for about a year. I'm not telling y'all "Do it," but in such a hypothetical scenario, I'd still head into Lacey, pick up a decent job, and get back into living the life I want to live (writing, reading, gaming, cooking, etc.)
