Karol is kind of annoying, but nowhere near the worst ever. Plus he's the most knowledgeable and helpful of the group about the guilds and where particular places are and they'd be totally lost without him so at least he pulls his weight.

This is definitely it. Vesperia ends up having amazing playable characters by the end but until the last quarter of the game or so Yuri and Patty are the only two who are at all fun to play. Judith is especially atrocious at first but later on she can do shit like this:

it's been probably about 8 years since i played it but i remember the issue for me was that i didn't feel the party had any chemistry or uniting goal

the whole first half of the game was like "well we're all traveling to <next location> so i guess we'll keep going together" and i didn't feel anything was keeping the party together other than plot convenience

and so it didn't ever feel compelling to me

Hot take: Vesperia only ever got traction because it had the audacity to be an Xbox 360 exclusive JRPG back in the day and that made it special/noteworthy.

I think it's better than that, but it's certainly a factor in it being singled out. It's exactly what happened with Symphonia on the GameCube.

There are two good tracks. Not fantastic, but pretty good. The worst thing is that when you first hear, say, the Dahngrest theme, the thought isn't "wow, this is great", it's "wow, was the rest of the OST so unnoticeable that I didn't even realize it wasn't good until this started playing?"

Ring a Bell is slick.

Vesperia does have the best graphics in the series though. They nailed the art style and kind of regressed afterwards. And I like all the characters individually (including Karol). Overall though, I think it's a game that's less than the sum of its parts. It doesn't come together as a cohesive whole and doesn't give you a lot of 'momentum' to keep playing through some parts of the game. Doesn't help that Yuri's personal story is easily the best part of the game and it totally fizzles out.

I didn't finish the game but I remember also being really underwhelmed with the main villain.

And, this may be a little, uh, unfair, because every Tales game is like this, but the plot felt like it was just throwing new keywords at me because "Every Tales game needs a world defined by unique terms and magical phenomenon" and it didn't feel... necessary. It felt like the plot had mechanics more than it had depth? I don't remember though, this was years ago.

You're not being unfair and also correct that every Tales game does that. Doesn't mean they should get a free pass for it!

Vesperia is particularly bad about the BS fake terminology, though, even for Tales. There's a minute and a half chunk when the elder Kritya in the floating town is explaining the lore in front of the big wall diarama, and it's just absolute nonsense. It's just one seem, but it really nails down how off the rails this story got in a bad way.

tales of the abyss for example has tons of mechanical stuff and lore, but it's all related to the idea that the world is run by the, uh, "score" or w/e which tells everyone how their life is gonna go, and the systems around that, and that was really cool because it was a great concept. i don't remember what vesperia's worlds gimmick was but i think it was just about elemental stuff to control water/earth/air or something? and it wasn't as interesting, basically.

The rumor is that the last, and easily worst, third was handled by Baba, who would then go on to be a blight on Tales until Zesteria.

It's incredibly obvious that the 3 acts of the game are not from one unified writer.

Vesperia is still one of the top Tales games IMO, but going back to it these days can be really rough. It's the best example of a "bridge game" that I've ever seen. It starts out very much in the Symphonia/Abyss area of gameplay, evolves throughout and comes out the first truly modern Tales game by the end.

Fascinating game and 100% worthy of respect, but at this point I think I'd rather replay almost any game in the series that's come out since. Xillia 2, Graces and Berseria in particular!
