it's out in like 5 minutes

Did S2 damper a lot of enthusiasm for the series? There doesn't seem to be nearly as much anticipation for this new season.

Season 2 ended so well (minus the final 20 seconds) that yeah, I'm not as hyped for this unless they take the story in an exciting direction right away.

I think most of the reviews are saying this is the best season yet. Season 2 was fine but tough to capture the same energy as Season 1 in the zeitgeist

Im watching it now and just finished the second episode.

I understand a time jump was needed because of the age of the main actors, but I'm not really a fan on how no one has really mentioned anything that has happened before this.

Agreed, I'd prefer some references to S1 and 2 not only because it would seem natural, but also as a cheap refresher because it's honestly hard to remember who even knows about the paranormal crap that occurred in the past two years. Like... does the whole town know or just the main cast? Can't remember.

really good stuff. a huge improvement over season 2 in every aspect and arguably better than season 1.

all the characters are really evolving/changing in interesting ways and the show is consistently skillful at playing up 80's nostalgia without it coming across as pandering or (overly) cheesy.

Just finished, I actually thought that was worse than S2 and way worse than S1. Still enjoyable but the series has really gone downhill since the amazing first season.

I had two major problems. One was the lame drama shoehorned in between everyone. There wasn't a single relationship that wasn't plagued by some fight over dumb things that really shouldn't matter considering the situation they're in. I also didn't like how the Mind Flayer plot and the Russian plot seemed like two completely disconnected stories with only one flimsy thing linking them together. Like, the gate being slightly open was what let the Mind Flayer operate but that's it. It didn't feel like enough. The Russians never even learned the Mind Flayer existed.

2 episodes in and... Was the show always this cheesy and stupid? Like I remember the campy elements, but I don't recall them going full-on shopping montage.

It always had a cheesy style, and the writing's been campy since the start. I think that even among critics (a lot of people do see the show's corniness as a positive), that stuff gets glossed over because simply put, they lucked out by finding the most likable core group of child actors since The Goonies - they carry the show.

I binged the whole thing on Thursday, and thought it was the best season yet. Really bummed that they killed my favorite character, Billy, because he was a fckn hardass from the jump and they finally gave him some back story to let you know he isn't just a murderous psychopath but the 80's feel and the whole scheme of the plot felt like things were really happening, and for once Will wasn't the sacrificial lamb who needed saving and got to be involved in more of the story.

I feel this way too even though i still watched s2 and s3 and enjoyed them ok enough.

I think this season was the weakest of them all, the Billy arc was pretty uninteresting, the Russian thing wasn't particularly engaging, and the character interaction, while sometimes phenomenal, felt a little dulled overall.

1 > 2 > 3

The kids aren't cute anymore, El isn't interesting, and the deus ex machinae every 15 minutes is boring.

Still an ok season in a vacuum I guess. Should have done way more with the zombies though.

How did Ulti manage to grow up in the late 80s and forget that the Russians were literally our number 1 enemy not just IRL but in every single piece of media set in the time period?

Fun Fact: he was born in the 80s, but he didnt really grow up then. He was too young to really remember the Cold War. Hes a 90s kid.

One thing I didn't like about this season was that there were too many straight-up action scenes. The first two didn't really have a whole lot of fight choreography or shooting or even chase scenes really, the action scenes were more about suspense whereas this one just has Hopper doing martial arts at russians surprisingly often and it feels a bit silly. There are so many moments in this show where someone should have died easily if the people or the monster was really trying and it just felt kind of silly, like eventually you just lose the suspension of disbelief a little bit.

I'm fine with the show trying on a slightly different tone but it just didn't do it for me.

2 > 1 > 3

I really liked this season, and the end had me in tears, but... I just feel like the setpieces weren't great. The best moments were with the new characters (aka Steve, Dustin, Robin, Erica), but each of the individual plots just felt less interesting to follow than anything that happened in the previous seasons.

I finished this the other day and thought it was decent stuff. The relationship stuff was kinda dumb and there wasnt really much interesting going on with some of the characters though. Will was basically just there though I guess that might be considered an upgrade over needing to be rescued. The one thing I didnt see coming was Robin revealing she was interested in a girl. Seemed so out of nowhere with stuff before it making it look like her & Steve would end up hooking up.

I feel like the previous seasons had more intimidating monsters too. One thing I hate is when they do episodes with a lot of flashing lights. It hurts to look at even if you arent prone to seizures. I think every season has done it though and I wish they would just stop. Flickering lights for several minutes isnt scary its just annoying to look at.
