@Thompson I'd say I like music in general. Certainly there are genres I'm less warm to than others. Ray Price abandoning honky tonk country for the Nashville sound is a disappointment. But I try to keep an open mind, so whenever I hear a song I like, I'll add it to my Spotify playlists (that are sorted by year). If it was a really good song, I'll look what else the artist has produced. That's how I can come across a forgotten gem. It also helps that I frequently visit Rateyourmusic to peruse artist discographies and various music genres to find both engaging obscurities or acclaimed chart toppers. Of all the playlists I have created so far, the sixties playlists are the most complete. 1960 has over 300 songs, which is actually only a third of what 1969 has. This disparity can be attributed to the birth and proliferation of many new genres (garage rock, ska, soul, reggae, funk, progressive rock etc.) during the decade. The decades before and after have considerably smaller playlists at the moment, with each year only having 50 or so songs each, and I've not even created a playlist for the new millenium years yet! On the other end, I don't have a playlist for music older than 1956. But the primary reason as to why my 60s playlists are so massive is that I've been on a 60s music adventure for these past few months. So, as I mentioned earlier, when I find a song I like, I put in its respective playlist. But I also like harmony, which means that I spend energy and time to see that the new song fits in. Quite jarring to put a hard rock song inbetween two cool jazz pieces, no? To save myself a lot of trouble of knowing where to best drop the song, I've created tables of each playlist where each song has its most approriate genre listed. I source the genres from Allmusic and Ratemymusic, by the way. As for that side note, it's nice that Phish did that throwback, even though I have ambivalent feelings about new renditions of classic songs. At best, it can be a great interpretation that stands equal to its original, if not surpassing it. At worst, it's prime unoriginality depreciating a venerated classic for purely salable purposes that undeservedly replaces the original in the people's conscious mind. But that's neither here nor there. Cathy's Clown is a cool song that deservedly is in my collection. P.S. Phish is a band I've never heard of before. I'll have to explore their discography some day. --- Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I actually have you tagged as Knows a Joan Baez song and that was from a while ago. Respect. Yeah, I remember. It was in a topic with sad songs. Donna donna is probably the saddest song I can think of. It's actually more depressing than sad. The saddest I know is a very heartrending dirge commemorating a young girl who had died in a car accident. Anyhow, brill building pop is a bit of an engima to me, as it's a genre I've seen applied from Gene Pitney and Ronettes to Neil Sedaka and Ben E. King. Moreover, it's harder to define by ear than most other genres, such as philly soul being notably lush and ethereal in contrast to its more earthy and peppier progenitor, Chicago soul, or rocksteady being slowed down ska without the horns. Granted, those are reductionisms, but it's what makes it easier for me to begin to distinguish two similar (but not interchangeable) genres from one another. So, as far as I can discern, brill building is pop music from the late 50's to mid 60s, but with more complex and sophisticated arrangements and a richer sound than its contemporaries thanks to Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound". Ergo, pop music with a large backing orchestra. I suppose though that Ronettes' type of brill building sound overlaps with Detroit soul, as they do share a resemblance to The Supremes and The Marvelettes, two contemporary Motown girl groups whose songs were typically rhythmic and danceable soul. --- Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images. ... Oh, you took harmony to mean vocal harmony? What I meant with harmony was that I very much prefer that the songs in my playlists segue from one another smoothly. A block of folk songs followed by soul could be jarring, but if a juxtaposed soul and folk song share similar (thouygh not identical) instruments and tempo in their respective first and final ~10 seconds, then the transition is much smoother. masterbarf posted... I'll add ten of my favorites. Mostly electronic, as the sixties were just an amazing time for electronic music. Though this music is so often done as long compositions rather than bite size tracks. Nice list there. Lots of familiar names there, such as Tod Docksteader and Silver Apples. They actually represent two sides electronic music in the sixties. Traveling Music is a fine example of musique concrte, whereas Silver Apples is psychedelic pop incorporating electronic effects and a steady, almost robotic beat. Proto-house music, if you will. Most electronic music before the 1970s were long and highly experimental mosaics produced with sped up, slowed down, and reversed sound effects and speech samples. It's the avant-garde jazz of electronic music, I suppose. Though I have to say that Captain Beefhart's Frownland feels more like free jazz with how almost atonal it is. 23 VIII 64 2:50:45-3:11 AM The Volga Delta, on the other hand, is strangely trance-inducing despite (or due to) being 20 minutes of almost invariable metallic groaning and humming. I should mention many many composers have composed the Mass before then and after. Bach was the first to truly make it, one piece. --- "Whatever the reason you're on Mars, I'm glad you're there, and I wish I was with you." ~Carl Sagan. Currently playing: Flight Simulator X.~PC ...
