I DID IT In order of those movies I think you'd like the most: 1. A Clockwork Orange (every feminist's most hated film, so it's a must) 2. The Godfather (a movie about real men acting like men; also it's just very great) 3. Pulp Fiction (just genuinely entertaining stuff, especially for a first watch) 4. Hoop Dreams (you will enjoy the basketball parts at least) 5. 2001: A Space Odyssey (you seem open to sci-fi, but keep in mind it is very abstract) 6. Apocalypse Now (the best war movie ever, but don't expect Saving Private Ryan) 7. Citizen Kane (a classic story but probably too old for your tastes) 8. Chungking Express (I don't imagine foreign movies are your thing) 9. 8 1/2 (ditto) 10. Mulholland Drive (guessing this will piss you off to no end) --- "A more mature answer than I expected."~ Jakyl25 "Sephy's point is right."~ Inviso ... Copied to Clipboard!

I watched The Man from Earth and really enjoyed it. I need to re-read your summary again. This is funny considering the writer started writing it fifty years ago! But IIRC he did finish it in the 90s, so maybe that's why it feels that way. I tried making my write-up as spoiler free as possible since I think the power of the movie comes out most in a blind watch-through. I think if I had to weigh a director's films with points--like a top 10 would get 100 points, top 20 would get 95 points, and so on--I would bet Kubrick comes out on top. Scorsese is probably number 2 for the sheer body of work he has.
Spielberg wouldn't be that high if we're allowed to deduct points for genuinely bad movies like kingdom of the crystal skull. --- "A more mature answer than I expected."~ Jakyl25 "Sephy's point is right."~ Inviso ... Copied to Clipboard!

From what I've read about it, it seems like a fairly typical gangster epic compared to Goodfellas. I'll probably just watch Goodfellas again (only seen it once, back in 2014), and then watch Casino for comparisons. Roger Ebert giving it 4 stars piques my curiosity, but I think he largely enjoyed the portrayal of the brokers at the top. That's pretty cool how Scorsese's gangster flicks go up the crime ladder from Mean Streets to Goodfellas to Casino admittedly, but the subject matter just doesn't interest me much. The average viewer probably identifies with Henry Hill sooner than Ace Rothstein.
Watched Raging Bull for the first time earlier this year to follow on from De Niro's scene-stealing performance in The Godfather Part II. The vibe I got from the film was "yeah, I see how this film is so highly-regarded, and it's truly a great film, but it's not the kind of thing I would usually like to watch". On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it almost right between an 8 and a 9, but slightly closer to the former. It probably came across as a strange experimental effort at the time of release, hence its mixed reception and failure to win Best Picture over Ordinary People (which I've seen a bit of while channel-surfing, seems pretty good even if not Raging Bull good). --- "Nothing I could do!" -Darksydephil ... Casino is more interesting for portraying the evolution of Las Vegas from a mob-driven desert town to a corporatized swimming pool for old people. Unfortunately, that's not the focus for most of the film. And I find the characters really hateable, almost to the point that it becomes kind of depressing to watch. It's definitely fallen out of favor for me over the years while Goodfellas just keeps cementing its place as one of the greatest of all time. --- "A more mature answer than I expected."~ Jakyl25 "Sephy's point is right."~ Inviso ... Calling Avatar "bad" is just an insane opinion.
The fact that The Hurt Locker won the academy award just because Bigelow was Cameron's ex-wife is what was crazy. Avatar should have won that award going away. Cameron literally created brand new technology to create that film. It was a masterpiece of filmography. You can say the story itself is overused and trite if you wish to. However, that doesn't take away from the sheer magnificence of what they did to create that film. Though, if you don't tear up during the World Tree scene or Neytir's scene, I am in shock. I mean... This is one of the best acted scenes I have seen, and it is freaking blue aliens portraying it. The film is rather excellent that got hated on for being popular moreso than not being good. The Hurt Locker was 100x worse and was a slap in the face to the greatest director of films that has ever existed (arguably). --- Xbox Live User Name - Corrik Currently playing: Division 2 ...
