While I'm defending Biden for that exchange, I do think it's going to be the main story out of the debate and that it could very well hurt him. That said, I think he did pretty well outside of that answer.

tbqh, Biden's best hope is that nothing changes... and it's not an unrealistic hope because a poll asking about whether his comments on working with segregationists showed among Democrats that more said it made them more likely to support him than less likely (it was basically even but slightly more in favor)

The poll question gave pretty favorable framing of it but still.

Biden will be fine for now. There's a sizable portion of Democrats who will support him more based on this kind of thing. It's when the field narrows that he would have problems.

It's not even the busing part that made that so brutal for Biden, IMO. If anything, I think Harris' lead into that was more devastating where she clearly laid out that he picked two senators who built their reputation on segregation as his example.

Although Biden flubbed the exchange when it went to busing too. Harris was absolutely correct when she pointed out that this was an area where the federal government had to take action. like that's not obscure civil rights in america history. Biden was essentially making a "states' rights" argument there in a situation that history shows states were resistant and had to be compelled. He got rescued there when the moderators retook control because damn it was spiraling out of control.

It was just really bad for him. That exchange is 100% the story out of this debate unless it becomes how the moderators totally lost control after a relatively controlled first night. Or memes about Williamson's answers.

Despite the fact that I'm pretty sure he got the least amount of time (I think he only got 3 questions?) he refrained from joining the interrupt/trying to talk over people bandwagon. I mean, the fact that he got almost no speaking time obviously limits things but I'd place him miles ahead of Hickenlooper, for example.

Trump never went on the offensive against anyone who didn't come at him first. He didn't need to, because loads of candidates were chomping at the bit to go after the frontrunner. And when they did, Trump hit back with 10 times the force. Trump is also miles better at this kind of vicious attacking than Andrew Yang can be expected to be. Like, if he's not going to be amazing at it.....don't play that game.

Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that nearly 8 million people hold more than one job. But most of those extra jobs are part time, not full time. And the millions of people amount to just 5 percent of Americans with jobs. So that means 95 percent of workers are not working two or three jobs just to survive, making this a misleading statement.

Bernie said Millions of people are working 2-3 jobs to survive, but the stats show that about 8 million people hold more than one job so obviously that was a fucking lie. Got em!

This whole concept of fact checking as it's carried out is stupid. The point of the debates is that candidates present their arguments to the public. Fact checkers are basically filtering the debates by 1) interpreting what the candidate said, 2) including recasting a statement of opinion into a factual statement not said by the candidate, and 3) checking the veracity of the fact.

The whole thing is insidious because it requires a high level of articulation to argue against, so most of the public is easily misled by fact-checkers. I think sometimes you have to use a wrecking ball to go after dishonesty and Trump did a great job of beating the dishonest fact-checkers, which Mitt Romney and John McCain couldn't do. He raised the stakes higher - instead of trying to argue that he was telling the truth, he boldly claimed that truth does not exist.

Bernie has always completely outright rejected the idea of running third party, its so weird they always act like he is considering it. I mean, its not weird, the corporate media is clearly against his candidacy for obvious reasons, but its annoying. Especially since they love to call out that he is not a democrat! kind of a weird thing to hate someone for not being a democrat but also hate on them for (theoretically) running not as a democrat?

Bernie running as a Dem is vastly preferable to him running third party and it's a dumb criticism of him.
