My son used to have a cat. They were best friends and played together frequently. This cat was very protective of him.

Almost a year and a half ago, my son's cat didn't come home while playing outside. He was a really friendly cat, and I assumed someone nabbed him (he had a collar with name and phone number and such). My son who was only 6 months old at the time was really sad about it, but with time forgot about the cat. Anyways, while walking yesterday I saw the cat sitting on someone's porch. It was the home of a family with a couple small children. I assume the cat visited this family and they claimed him as a pet.

So, do I confront the family, and reclaim my son's cat and break the hearts of small children, or do I let him stay and find my son a different cat to love?

(I'm leaning heavily towards a new cat)

That's a pretty ordinary looking cat. Lots of cats look just like it. What makes you so certain that it's the same cat? I don't really see anything about it that stands out.

Even if it is the same cat and you could somehow prove it, too much time has passed and it's clearly happier where it is or it would have come back. Get a new cat. Or better yet, a dog. A Boston Terrier. They great little dogs.

Cat has some very specific markings and features that would make him easy to identify.

Also he still comes when his name is called, so there's that.

No. You used to have the cat being as your son was 6 months old. Ultimately what matters is if you care enough to get your cat back. If you don't then it's great the cat has found a home. Your son doesn't care. Also make sure it is your cat before you make a fool of yourself.

assuming everything in this story is accurate, I say just leave it alone. your son doesn't even remember the cat. and it's now been with the new family longer than it was with you. and the kids there are older and will miss the cat. just get a new one

Theres plenty of cats in the world which need loving

Yeah. You can still make a bond at a young age. Especially with a pet. Especially if that pet is young, as well. From what Ive seen. They cant always express themselves like older humans or as well. Doesnt mean they dont have those feelings...

I only let my cats out when I'm outside for for like half hour a day I'll go outside and sun bathe with them

you have more brain cells in your stomach then they do in their head
letting your cats roam free(shit on other peoples property)
is nice in theory but it's mostly a negative in most areas where people live they simply don't have the tools to survive long outside outside of drinking dirty water

Most people I know with outdoors cats will put food and water out for them. Some even call them home to give them stuff. It just depends on the owners. Even my cats like to go in the backyard. My older cats, and a friends cat, use to hangout on the side of the house. My younger cats just likes to explore the little porch areas... Sometimes, they are just outside until the owner comes back...
