Modern rock stations have always played past alternative rock songs. I remember listening to 94.1 in Las Vegas that played the 80s, the 90s, and today in 1998. You will likely always get sublime, linkin park, the killers, no doubt, greenday, blink, etc on your modern rock stations

Remember when modern meant modern, but then it became old, so we called it contemporary, but then that became old too?

Was it a cover by a different band? Maybe it was a newer version of the older song.

But also, screw you for making me feel old(er).

My first dick-punch was when the local classic rock station started playing 80s, but it got even worse when they started playing 90s.

If they start playing 00s I may have to hang myself.

It's also hard when you realize that people who weren't born yet when you were just starting high school can now legally drive... though it gets worse when you eventually hit the point where people who weren't born yet when you were graduating college can now legally drink.

After age 21 or so, life just sort of becomes a succession of realizations about how fast time is speeding you to the grave. Enjoy!

In radio terms, "contemporary" never really meant "modern" as much as it did "music for old people". It was generally soft jazz, light rock, and easy listening that is just this side of elevator muzak. It's the sort of stuff you can imagine a boring mom listening to, or maybe playing in a doctor's office waiting room.

Back in the 90s, a radio station near me changed from beach music to Alternative Rock. I became a fan after driving home one night, and they played "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Orange Crush" back to back.

Last year, I heard them playing Lorde. Now I have nothing against Lorde; I think she's a very talented young woman with a world of potential. But she's not alternative rock. :/

Is there really any mainstream new modern rock/alternative anymore?

I guess Coldplay and the like are misery music rock? The only modern ones I can think of? All the rest is mumble rap or electronic mumble rap, gawsh modern mainstream music is trash.

The real "good" radio stations are the weird ones, imo. Like, radio is kinda bad because you cant control what is played, but anything that isnt a generic station owned by clearchannel or otherwise following the same "50 songs, all day every day" if you even have one. Here we have one called WYEP that is funded by grants and people who listen. Not always do I like what they play but its still refreshing when the radio is on to hear something different. Also college radio. One time the local college station was playing what appeared to be gameboy/color esque music, as well as other things. No one genre dominates, ive heard jazz, folk, video game, alternative, etc etc.

I could go on for days about how much I hate the generic radio format, but since it all boils down to being easy and accessible, oh well.

Yeah, we have a local, WXRC, 95.7 "The Ride". It's mostly classic rock, but you can go literally days without hearing the same song twice.

There's also 102.9 The Lake, their motto is "We play everything". And they do, but they have a certain amount of repitition.

I really only listen to our "alternative" station (106.5) for their morning show Woody & Wilcox.

I get why these generic radio stations exist: at any time somebody can turn on the station and the song they hear is one they already know and know the words to. They mainly play(at least the one I listen to at work ugh) #1 hit singles which is why some popular bands only have a song on rotation even if they are super huge bands. Such as the station I have to listen to only plays to my knowledge, one Pink Floyd song, another brick pt 2., because it hit #1. Not every pink floyd single has done that, but it shouldnt make a difference because a lot of people will recall other PF hits as well even if not #1.

I don't really care for "classic rock" at all, but there should be a radio station that plays more than just #1 hit songs and some others. What would the harm be in giving the unwashed masses at the very least every PF single on rotation? i dont know.

The main rock stations on my settings are:

95.7 - classic rock, swinging more toward "deep cuts" than standards
98.7 - mostly contemporary rock
99.7 - classic rock, mostly "the hits"
105.7 - classic & contemporary, mostly "the hits"
106.5 - used to be alternative rock, now mostly just alternative rock and pop
107.9 - basically a top 40 station

I used to argue with my boss about the lack of variety when I was a DJ. We had (at the time) almost 40 years of music to pick from. Why are we only playing the same Rolling Stones songs? Hendrix? Etc.

He told me it had to do with licensing and fees, and well as audiences. People will probably only listen to songs they're familiar with. Radio stations start playing songs that no one but hardcore fans know, then they're likely going to lose a lot of their listeners

He explained the money part and it was so damn confusing and complicated, I can't even begin to accurately explain it here

At this point, "20-30 years" refers to the 90's. That's pretty modern, even if we're using a definition of "old" music that includes things from the 20th century. Personally, I laugh at such a definition and call pretty much anything post-1900 "modern," but that's me. I also laugh at calling a 10-minute song "long."
