My understanding is that in the previous games, the Beatrice that is off murdering people in Rokkenjima is the 'piece', and the one who talks and debates with Battler is the real Beatrice, the game master. The way Ange describes it (something like 'why does Beatrice have to create a piece and not be more direct?') however, it's like Battler only interacts with the piece-Beatrice? Can someone clear this up for me. Don't think it's much of a spoiler.

Unless I get to know what happened 6 years ago it will be impossible for me to relate to Battler being sad. If I were subject to such treatment by Beatrice I would be glad to see her back, not miss her.

One 'hunts' boys and the other 'trains' them. These two seem very dangerous, but in a different way...

'If you don't take the test, you will break up', conveniently leaving out that it's likely for them all to die violently very soon. And no one is forcing Kanon to quit his job if Shannon leaves. And don't they have... mail and pagers and phones in the 80s as well? It's going to be hard, but it's not like they can't contact each other again

Right as Battler decides to start viewing Beatrice more like a daughter, Beatrice joins the test to make Battler love her more (doesn't say it has to be romantic, but it certainly looks like it). Even though she can't stop calling him Father. This is getting awkward.
Having her join in is a bad idea. Willing to bet that both the other pairs will end up losing.
And all this romance talk is a starting to be a bit much. I want some blood.

Erika is saying some incomprehensible things, maybe related to her past, like being hurt by human emotions and lies and that's why she hates things that aren't absolutely logical and 100% true.
Wait what? A backstory for freaking Erika??

My impression of Erika is simply Bern's piece and double and won't stand out much as her own character, but I seem to be mistaken. Well not my fault when it took so long to get to her background.

About time we see George confronting his mother over the marriage, time to see what he's made of.

Having a sneering Evatrice instead of a crying Eva would only serve to rile up George, he seems to be the sort who is weaker to 'carrots' than 'sticks'. Now there's is absolutely no reason for him to hold back.

George and then others have become self-aware of the game and their existence as pieces. Another one of those things that just...happened. What's next, are they going to make Jessica kill Natsuhi as well? How do you do better than someone who kicked his mom to death?

Good to see more parent-child relationships explored in Umineko. Discounting Kinzo and his children, the only one that got attention was Rosa/Maria; usually the adults and kids form their own groups across the games. The romance plotline is being used much better than episode 2.

They only had to choose to kill a random person - no, a piece - on the game board. Battler the game master is playing nice here. And of all the people, George went for his mother. Don't know if I should be impressed or scared.

Don't know how Jessica can beat George if she didn't kill his closest family member like he did. That is, if this is really what they are going to be judged on.

Jessica meets Kyrie who proceeds to tell about her life story. No doubt she will tell Jessica to do whatever it takes to win. I don't think you can kill her that easily Jessica, you haven't seen what she is capable of.

There was a theory I had long ago that Battler was actually Kyrie's son and not Asumu's, as evidenced by him unable to say 'I am Asumu's son' in red in episode 4, and the same delivery date. Not clear on why and how the babies were swapped, but I'm sticking to it.

'I had planned to kill someone and would have done it had she not died!' that's not something you should tell to anyone at all.
While I can understand where she is coming from, she's got a warped mindset. She calls it force of will and determination, I call it obsessive and borderline yandere. Going that far is just wrong, for lack of a better word. Maybe find someone else, maybe look around and find things more important than getting a man.

It's like letting your life revolve around a man only... not a good mentality to instill into Jessica

Well Kyrie shot herself in the foot.
Because we need to have a an action scene, Leviathan shows up and for some reason is Kyrie's friend.
Jessica's got Ronove's walls and is immortal. It's hardly a test if you give so many bonuses to the participant, what a farce.

Battler's doesn't like killing his family, so he gets George, Jessica etc. to do it for him instead. How considerate.

I didn't realize that Kanon and Shannon have to do it too. Unfair for young-Beatrice with only her in the team.

The way this is going, they're all going to have a long sequence of killing one person, and it's take quite a while before we even get to the body discoveries/first twilight. It also feels I'm, dunno, nearly halfway through? Man this is going to end prematurely like the last episode isn't it.

Rosa is up next. Whoever comes to kill her will have to listen to a lecture of her troubled relationships before doing the deed.
I just realized nearly all of the adults in the family have personal life problems. The only ones that got along without any past or present issues are Eva and Hideoyoshi.
Going with this logic, either Natsuhi or Krauss is dying next, Rudolf also has a chance.

All these people saying love is a nightmare or hell or a war whatever, I think it's most down to their own stupidly. Maybe spend more energy in getting your act together, not whining about how others wronged you or how terrible your life is.

Good of them to keep Kanon and Shannon's killings short, I don't know if I can stand it if these kills are as long as the prior ones. These are ending up way too easy though and doesn't match up to what George did.

I won't pretend I'm an expert on love or something, but I find myself disagreeing with a lot of what this game, or the characters, have to say about it.

The last target is Natsuhi. That's all the females in the family. That's sexist - I mean, probably not a coincidence.
That 'theory' about Battler being the baby that fell off a cliff 19 years ago is such nonsense that I can't believe young-Beatrice is using it as a pretext to kill Natsuhi.

Back to my theory on Beatrice's true nature, Natsuhi's mirror doesn't affect elder-Beatrice because no one else knew about it or thought it would be effective against the ruler of Rokkenjima. What is this younger-Beatirce though? I don't have any idea about this one...

The first twilight is done at last. Now we can get behind this silly love trial and get on with it... oh wait, there's going to be more. Damn.
I feel romance is not the strongest aspect of Umineko. Not saying it's bad, but I'm never that into this particular plotline and felt it dragged on a bit in this episode, I haven't learnt a whole lot more about the characters doing the killing/getting killed.
For me the appeal lies in the mysteries, riddles and debates, which should be coming shortly (even if they have to involve Erika).

The writer of Umineko is blatantly self-inserting into this Hachijo/Featherine character. All right all right, I'll pay attention to these love stories.

If you reach Beatrice's truth, you can become an Endless Witch, write stories about Rokkenjima, which helps others reach the truth.

Alright it's time to tackle to case. Let's say magic is all an illusion and this is a series of normal murders. The killers are going to be George, Shannon, etc. There going to be a load of locked rooms. And the motive is probably something about love.
At times it feels I shouldn't bother too much with these locked room mysteries, they pile with every episode and there are never any answers.

Erika is not using detective cheats it will be all-or-nothing (it won't be, otherwise we won't have 2 more episodes to go), which is totally her own idea. Calling Bern horrible and evil is an understatement when she managed made feel bad for Erika. Just a tiny bit.

And did Battler... kill Battler on the board? This isn't out of the question, Beatrice didn't ever kill the piece-Battler because she had to show him something, it isn't necessary now that Battler knew the truth.

Battler is dead. This isn't exactly unexpected, we have yet to see Rudolf react to his child dying.

I've thought about it before, now it is finally confirmed that all the crimes in all episodes are possible by humans. Whether magic exists or not doesn't really matter.

EDIT: Ange has some interesting ideas again. Basically, 'magic' itself isn't real, it is an illusion to cover up seemingly inexplicable, but plausible human actions.
Right now I'm pretty convinced that everything that has happened is actually driven by humans, and magic is like another perspective, or embellishment. I don't know HOW but there has to be a way even for the craziest scenes.

EDIT2: I mean I had that 'all magic is fake' line of thought before, but never felt sure enough. Now it's increasingly likely this is indeed what is going on.

Because Erika didn't properly investigate, I don't even know how they died from the character menu. The cause of death has to be important in the game, otherwise there wouldn't be a reason to hide it.

Another thing I remembered... who is that person trapped in a guest room I keep seeing in this episode? Battler's body found in such a room make me suspect it was him. Doesn't seem like it though.

Lambda said - without using red - that these are perfect locked rooms, and there can be a illusion of crime where there aren't any murders at all. This could be used to solve the older games, but then the deaths in those were already confirmed in red.

Now they're saying the murders are perfect as well. Perfect closed room and perfect murder. You could bring up suicide, accident, illness, or whatever, but it's obviously going to be denied in red. This will a more interesting game than the last because Erika doesn't have cheats, and I think it will be very difficult for her unless Battler badly screws up.
(cue wedding scene from beginning of episode) oh yeah that is gonna happen. Never liked these kinds of flash-forwards.

Starting out we have the usual defining of locked rooms. This is shaping up to be more like episodes 3-4, where the players understand the rules clearly, and are fighting on more or less even ground.

Now I realize why I didn't like episode 5 as much as 3 and 4. That 'game' was just about bullying and framing Natsuhi and didn't really have much of a fair competition at all.

Rudolf Krauss Gohda Hideyoshi are ruled out as involved in the first twilight.
Then the others alive can still commit the murders. I can claim that they entered the room at some time after discovery and only then did the murders actually happen.

The key point here is that Battler refused to confirm 'the murders didn't happen after those 4 entered the room'. This looks to be a big opening, but there's too many possibilities at this moment.

This is the first time that Rudolf and Hideyoshi have survived while their spouses died. You'd think that's something that has already happened after 5 episodes.

Erika is, unbelievably, not annoying ever since the game began properly. Please go back to being a dick so that I can keeping hating on you.

Rudolf 'never had a chance to tell Kyrie and Battler' all right I think I can be fairly certain about my 'Kyrie is Battler's real mother' theory

I did see the killings happen, so it should be clear who the culprits are... right? Could 'magic' be used to make it look like another person did it?
