I only played Octopath, but I heard that Bravely Default uses a similar battle system with the shield breaks and what not. The story in Octopath was bleh, but damn the gameplay was fun.

It's not the same break system. Just the same brave/default system to get more actions in a turn.

On topic: graphics are better for Octopath Travler, I love BD's graphics but Octopath is something else. Masterfully done graphics.

Other than that it's BD. BD has better characters, music (arguable), character growth (skill/trait wise), and plot/character development (yes, that's the truth, sadly).

Bravely Default has a really amazing soundtrack.

Definitely top tier. I still go back to the music regularly even after being finished with the game for years. REVO is genius.

Bravely Default was solid if not for the 6 hours of repeat dungeons at the end.

Bravely Second was anime levels of cliches and character tropes. It was better mechanically but the story was not good.

Octopath is even better mechanically, but the story is very hit and miss. Some chapters are amazing, others you just skip all the dialog. Also the game never recognizes that you have 8 people on this journey, so some plots fall apart when you realize "We have 4 people waiting at the pub, this trap would never work because they would come to see WTF is up"

If the other two games are better mechanically that's a relief. BD's biggest strength was its combat system and the music to me. Plot was kind of all over the place.
